No, Sandy Bridge is not a refresh. Arrandale was a refresh of the cancelled 45nm mobile Nehalem's, Sandy Bridge is a brand new architecture and Ivy Bridge will be the refresh of that. Sandy Bridge adds AVX instructions, a die shrunk higher powered integrated graphics with Turbo Boost support, higher speed DDR3 ram support, and other optimizations and tweaks.

Hm ...
It would appear that Sandy Bridge will be bringing in the new architecture.
I'm confused.
Penryn was a refresh of preexisting architecture, and then came Nehalem (which is known as the i series).
What the heck does Westmere include exactly?
Ah ... a refresh (a die shrink and lower TDP).
I must say I never noticed Westmere taking place, as I was under the impression that these i series we have in laptops today are the ones that came out after the core2duos.
Or, does the naming scheme include desktop cpu's only at times?
I'll still have to wait for a 6 or 8 core cpu's to make their debuts. -
