I'm sorry if this thread is redundant and has already been created.

Does any have a good idea (or know for a fact) when any, new Sandy Bridge laptops will be released? Which brand/models have been announced? And when can we expect to actual have them in hand?

I am about to pull the trigger on a i5 laptop...but if Sandy Bridge laptops are possible to have IN HAND by end of January or early February...for a reasonable price (for me...like $1k or less) - I might wait. If for production reasons...I would have to wait till Q2 or later...I'll pull the trigger now.

    Any ideas people?

Brands I am interest in: Asus, Lenova, Sony, Toshiba

If you're willing to wait until Jan/Feb I would wait.

You should be able to get them in your hand in Feb 2011, though depending on your usage, with your budget, you might be able to get a better deal with a current machine then.

Release date is 1/5. You will most likely purchase close to that date but actual ship date maybe longer..

Anyone know if there are any new graphic cards that are suppose to come out along with Sandy Bridge?

The reason I ask - is because today's GFX cards + Sandy Bridge...might not be such an improvement vs. Sandy Bridge + GFX card optimized for it....that could increase the "wait" time for a really nice improvement over current laptop performance. Just a thought.

Some models have already popped up on the web (with specs). Some machines are likely to be shipping at launch date or thereabouts. Expect the remainder of most high end machines to get updates by Feb.

2 reasons to wait. If you like what you see when they get here, you can go for the new models. If you don't, you can likely get a better price on the older machine.

We know there is at least a 6xxx series coming from AMD. Wouldn't be much of a stretch to think Nvidia has some 5xx models ready to roll for Sandy Bridge launch as well.

Yes new cards will be released in 2011.

Nvidia's 5 series. (GTX 580m, GTX 5xx'sm, GT5xx'sm). Heck, Nvidia's also releasing a duo-core processor for phones in 2011, called the Tegra 2. Motorola's upcoming Olympus model will feature it.

    ATI's 6 series. (6570m, 6550m, 68xx's, etc)

What exactly are you planning on doing with your laptop? At your budget, I doubt you'll get a high end GPU when it first comes out, though as I stated earlier, you can get a current generation high end card for a lot cheaper without sacrificing performance.

you don't think the i7-2720QM can be had for a grand??? :(

that would suck...i could have picked up a current gen 740QM for $850 a couple weeks ago

Supposedly all the quad core i7s are going to be faster, use less energy for the same price ranges as todays, maybe a tad bit more cause it's new tech. Again everything's up in the air right now.

I think it should be possible to get a i7-2720QM for less than $1K, but even if not, you can always go with the i7-2630QM which we've seen some machines for less than $1K even now and which will still be somewhat faster and a lot more power efficient than the 740QM.

Do you even need a quad core? You mentioned gaming, which is generally more GPU intensive and you can get some good deals with high end GTX 460M or HD 5850/70 now. It will probably be even cheaper in Jan. If the high end 5xxM series and HD 6xxxM comes out then, I doubt you'll see them for <$1000.
