Aha. Sorry also. I thought you were talking about my laptop. This thread is originally about Sandy Bridge upgrade, but I am the one who hijack it![]()
All right. I'll stick to i7-640M. However, I'll still wait until Monday so that I have enough time to think carefully![]()

I try to find the thread related to my motherboard (Mobile Intel® HM55 Express Chipset), and found it below:
http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Intel_(chipsets)/HM55_Express.html
Some of the upgrader claims that their laptop works fine after the upgrade:
This guy goes further by upgrading to i7-720QM and doesn't mention anything about overheating. He even said that he wants to try upgrading to i7-940XM
This guy aslo goes further by upgrading to i7-740QM and claims that his laptop can detect 16gb of RAM after the upgrade. He also doesn't mention anything about overheating.
This guy claims that he set his energy setting to balance in order to prevent overheating.
This guy also reminds about overheating after the upgrade.
However, there is also people claims that the upgrade is not successful.
After reading the successful stories (and ignoring the unsuccessful stories), now I even feel like I want to go for i7-940XM, i7-840QM or i7-740QM. The cheapest brand new CPU on ebay (including mailing cost to my country)for i7-940XM is USD149.30 , i7-820QM is USD85.99, and the i7-740QM is USD46.56. The price for i7-740QM is even cheaper than i7-640M (USD69.00)
.
I think I would like to try the i7-940XM. If i7-940XM doesn't work, then I will try i7-640M (or lower). If the i7-940XM, works but have overheating problem, then I will try the i7-840QM (or lower).
This time, I will purchase the CPU next Monday so that I have enough time to study if there is any other info saying that this thing will never work.

The i7-720QM that I purchased had arrived last weekend. However, it didn't work when I installed it on my laptop. After I installed it, my laptop could not be turned on. Everytime I press the on button, the LED for HDD on my laptop lighted up for less than 1 second, then turned off again. I'm not sure whether the CPU itself was faulty or my laptop is the one that was not compatible with Clarksfield CPU.
If it is really because my laptop is not compatible with Clarksfield CPU, then I think I have to resell the i7-720QM on ebay, amazon etc. Luckily I started with the cheaper i7-720QM and didn't straight away buy the expensive i7-940XM.
At the same time, I will buy any cheap i7-640M (or any other cheap Arrandale CPU) on ebay/amazon to see if it work on my CPU.
Thank you. -

Good day. Last time I mentioned in there that I tried to replace the i5-430M CPU on my ASUS A52JK with i7-720QM, but it doesn't work - the laptop couldn't be switched on at all after the CPU replacement. I think either the i7-720QM is faulty or because my BIOS has blocked the CPU. if I assume it is because on the second reason, that maybe my laptop cannot accept the Clarksfield CPU.
I have received the cheap Arrandale CPU that I ordered from ebay and tested on the same ASUS A52JK - this time it works. Below is the results:

1) With this progress, I decide to proceed to upgrade with i7 640M. Please advice if this is not going to work.
Thank you.Last edited: Mar 21, 2017OverTallman likes this. -

Thank you for the feedback. I have 1 thing to ask regarding the Core stepping thing. Below is the information regarding i7 640M and i5 560M:
i7-640M
http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_i7/Intel-Core i7 Mobile I7-640M CP80617004152AE.html
i5-560M
http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_... I5-560M CP80617005487AA (BX80617I5560M).html
From both link above, it is stated that the core steppings are K0 (Q4C9, SLBTN) for i7 640M and K0 (SLBTS) i5 560M. Is it okay to replace the i5 560M with i7 640M even though the thing in the brackets are different (Q4C9, SLBTN vs SLBTS)?
Sorry, I am totally newe with this core stepping thing -

Different processors? Different S-Spec. (e.g. i5-560M K0: SLBTS; i7-640M K0: SLBTN)
Different steppings? Different S-Spec. (e.g. i5-520M C2: SLBNB; i5-520M K0: SLBU3)
Those with 4-digit number are either Engineering Samples (ES) or Qualifications Samples (QS).
So yeah, S-Spec numbers don't mean **** unless you're playing with ES/QS parts. The most important thing is whether the motherboard accepts a certain processor. -

All right. I'll proceed purchasing the i7-640M from ebay. Thank you very much

Good day. Already received the i7 640M that I ordered from ebay and installed it on my laptop. Below is the results:
I think I stop this upgrade project right now (unless if it can be justified that the i7 720QM that I bought previously didn't work because it is faulty, not because it was not compatible with my laptop)
Thank you very much to everyone here for giving useful advice and guide all this time. Really appreciate it.Last edited: Apr 3, 2017OverTallman likes this.
