Merom is a chip Santa Rosa ia a platform. The current platform is Napa, and will hold merom back. If you can wait I would couple a Marom with Santa Rosa, that will be a significant upgrade.

Santa Rosa will make the following changes:

Support for second generation of Merom chips with new pinmap (no backward compatibility) and lower power consumption
    800MHz FSB (vs 667)
    802.11n (faster/better wi-fi)
X3000 integrated DX10 graphics (looks really promising - maybe even competitive with low/mid-range discrete solutions)
"Robson" - on-board NAND flash to act as a buffer between HDD and RAM to improve HDD performance and increase battery life
    Lower power consumption
    Lower heat output
    Windows Vista

So basically... it's gonna kick ass. Earlier this year, when I bought my laptop, it was a good time to buy. Now, with the prospect of all these new toys, I would say wait.

True its good to wait, specially for that stuff, but when will this end. I mean in q2 07 when santa rosa will be around, then we'll be lookin forward to 08 at soem otehr tech. Then pple will tell u to wait for that since its got lots of goodies. When that comes out, there will be somethin even better in the future and pple will say hold out and wait for the new goodies. Get the idea?

So if u can hold out with ur current pc, then by all means do so, as the longer it will last the better tech will be. But dont wait out just cuz of the prospect of SR and suffer with ur current machine. A Merom, heck even a Yonah will do absolutely fine at most tasks for the next couple of years.

From what I've heard, it's going to raise power consumption compared to the current platform, not lower it. They might *intend* for it to lower power consumption, but the previews and reports I've seen mostly say that it's not looking good in that respect.

Looks like you're going thru laptop at a decent pace (since you have a P-M and is looking at C2D). I'm also looking for a replacment for my Acer 8104. My thinking is that unless you are planning on running 64bit applications, I would just get a current core 2 duo when Merom comes out as those will drop in price by a large margin. For example the Acer 8204 which currently goes for around $1900 should be down below the $1600 mark and that's a killer price for a laptop with that kind of performance. Since Merom on a Napa platform will only give you about 10%-15% performance boast at the same CPU speed and consume just a few minute less of battery, I would just take the bargain 8204 and leave Merom and Santa Rosa for my next laptop in late 2007/early 2008.

well, they don't actually intend to discount the superseeded core duo when core2duo is out. the best time to buy computer is h1 2007, u don't need to wait till 2008 till the updated version of merom comes out :) at the H2 2007 a merom built on 40nm technology comes out, but thats not a major update, as it is not a new architecture as merom is, and the platform is still santa rosa. so that is why i think that when santa rosa it is a good time to buy a computer.

Actually they will as the Merom launch price will to very close to the current core duo price point. The lower T2xxx series price coupled with the lower price over a products lifespan will mean that most current generation laptop will drop by ~15% in 2 months. Since I go thru laptops every 14-18 months. This just work out fine as I can take the benefit of the coming price drop and then give time for the 40nm Merom (which will make a difference as it will consume less power) and Santa Rosa (DDR2 800) to mature and avoid the initial launch rush with higher price.

do keep in mind that new technologies coming out especially hardware will always have delays as past history shows. also, h1 of 2007 covers jan to june and I will almost bet my notebook it will be delayed to 2nd half of 07 if you're talking about a completely different platform, not just a different cpu. if whatever you have can last you a good year or so, I would wait, but if you're in the market right now for a new laptop, I would either go for the yonah, or merom, cause remember, your top of the line hardware is only as good as the software that take advantage of it.
