    Hello All,

I know this is not quite a laptop issue however I really need help!

I have recently had some major computer issues and in the process deleted all my data, ouch.
So I decided to use the time to upgrade and bought three new hard drives, all 500gb sata.

I set up RAID in the bios and all seemed to go well, except when I finally got windows loaded I only have access to 1 tb of drive and so I took a look at admin tools/comp management/disk drives and there it is.

only issue is it says it is dynamic and foreign! ?

    Can someone please help me?

    Lee

because you setup 2 500gb in raid 0, so you have 1tb in total.
the best way to prevent data lost in this case is create a clone backup of windows, re-create raid array as raid 1 (mirror) so 2 500gb will create an array in 500 gb. if 1 of them failed and your data is still there.
about the dynamic disk, did you change it from basic disk to dynamic disk after install windows? Can i see the screen shot of device manager and disk management?

Because it is a dynamic disk (instead of a Basic disk), maybe the RAID controller won't/can't used it?

Convert it back to Basic and try again.

    Good luck.

Right Click on Disk 2 (Dynamic, Foreign) and select Convert (I'm pretty sure).

    Good luck.

I do have only little experience with RAID, I'm a beginner.
If you configure 2 disk each 0,5 GB in RAID0, should not the OS see only one disk with 1GB? Judging from the captured screen, Windows seems to see them as 2 physical disks.
As there are 3 disks, I would suggest a RAID5 configuration, if its supported by the Raid controller. After the failing of one disk, the system is still working.

If you put in 3x 500GB drives and you have 1.5TB of space available, you are using RAID0 which is not redundant at all. You need RAID1 (2x 500GB to 1x 500GB mirrored) or RAID5 (more compute intensive 3x 500GB to 2x 1TB).

Raid5 will result in 1 TB(2x500GB) as one disk is needed for checksums.
