About 9 months ago my friend upgraded his computer, adding 1x1gb module, and keeping the original 512mb installed.
Well he decided he wanted to upgrade again so I went about helping him.
I couldn't find another 1gb that was exactly the same as the 1gb that had been installed a couple months back. So I just got 2 new one's. I installed one about 3 weeks ago, the computer has been running great since (1gb OCZ + 512mb Stock). I installed the 2nd 1gb on Sunday and I'm back to having problems. (just for clarification, they are the same exact brand, speed, model, everything, I bought them a week and a half apart because of the rebate that was on them).

After installing the memory so that I had 2x1gb in the computer, it starts up okay, but then we try to play a game and it crashes, one of the times being BSOD, one of the times it was a black screen. We tried it with 2 different games, counter-strike source, and an old not very intensive game called painkiller.
    I'm not sure where to go from here, the memory is this - 1GB 667MHz DDR2 PC2-5400 200-PIN OCZ - CL 5-5-5-15
I do try to research as much as i can before posting, and the only conclusion I can come to is that it's due to it being 667MHz.
Both of the previous 1gb sticks were 667, but they both had the stock stick installed at the same time, which if I remember correctly was 533MHz.

    Thanks guys

    -Update your BIOS

    -Run memtest86+ for 2hours

    Could have gotten defective modules.

I will do that first thing in the morning, thank you.

Is the thing I mentioned about it being because it's 667mhz or pc25400 even a posibility? Everything I read prior to this problem tells me no. But I read a few forum topics (different messageboard than this one) where people were saying that could be the problem. Just seems like there were few of those people, so I just want to get it out of my mind if it's not the problem.

will post back results after running memtest

I doubt running a faster module is causing the problem(I run a DDR2-667 stick with a DDR2-400 stick[yes its that old ;)] and I passed a 10+ hour memtest)...most likely the memory got damaged( ESD and the actual shipping are some causes for damages to the memory)

See what memtest says and go from there...

Also you may want to run Memtest on each stick individually.

flip and Kdawg told you the correct thing to do. Let me tell you what I would do first. Well just cause I can't follow directions. I would try each of the two sticks in question seperatly to see if it fails. This is the quick test. But it only tells you anything usefull if one of them fails. Memtest will tell much more. Good luck.

    What chipset is your laptop?

Toshiba have an ongoing issue with quite a few of their x200m based laptops where they will not boot with 2GB of ram, usually specifically 2GB DR2-667. My L100 will not boot with 2GB DDR2-667 but will boot with 1GB DDR2-667 and 1GB DDR2-533 with the 667 obviously downclocking to 533 speeds. I'm not sure why this is apart from being some kind of chipset issue.

Thanks I hadn't planned on running it on them individually but I will now. moon angel did a much better job at saying what I was trying to say about the 667 being the problem.

I know that 1 of them works, because he's been using it for a good 3 weeks now. I just can't remember if we had tested the new one long enough by itself to know for sure. He can't run the test until I get out there so maybe I'll have him switch them and he can just see if it runs okay by itself (the new one)

I don't know what the chipset is but I'll find out. I don't know how to do that on his laptop, but from searching I found the Dos Debug program method, would that be the best way to find out?
That must be the issue that people were talking about in the discussions I was reading. I'm really interested in knowing if that's my problem because from what I've done so far it seems to be either that or a corrupt module.

I still haven't done the test since the computers not at my house. But I've been running it on my desktop and it's going good (I've read about memtest before but I thought it would be a lot more work than it is) Thanks all.

CPU-Z will find the chipset of the laptop(look under the Mainboard tab).

IMO, crashing in windows indicates something is wrong with the memory...laptop not booting up=compatiblity issues and/or problem with the memory.

Also newer laptops like the compal IFL-90( see thread) or a few MSI laptop( see thread) had the problem with the BIOS not recognizing with anything but a 1GB stick in the memory slot(thus not booting up)...A BIOS update resloved both those laptop problems(though they had Intel chipsets) so you may want to try that (note: BIOS update can ruin your laptop if done improperly-only update your BIOS if the BIOS update release note mentions your problem)

Just tried to update a friends L35-S1054 from the stock 2x512 to 2x1gb Corsair Value Ram 667. Most of the time blue screens before making it into windows. When it does get into windows, launch IE and a minute later get crash errors and eventually another blue screen.

Tried it with 1 stick of 1gb and 1 of the 512's, no difference. Didn't try 1gb by itself but thats not really a solution anyway. Does seem like it doesn't care for the 667 memory, going to have to order some 533 I guess.
