I have an older Satellite, M45-S165 with the ATI Radeon 200 chipset.

Has the Celeron M 370 processor and was curious if there were a list of compatible Pentium Grade processors out there? Looking at Ebay I found that they weren't unreasonable in price.

    Thanks!

You'll be looking for Dothan Pentium-Ms. These all have model numbers (e.g. 740) and 2MB L2 cache. Banias Pentium-Ms are older and have 1MB L2 cache and require a different chipset. Any of the Dothans should be fine, just make sure to google the processor number (EG something like SL7EP) and make sure it's the same socket and format as your current cpu. You can find your current cpu by downloading and using cpu-z (again, google).

Also, make sure to watch your cpu temperatures especially if you go with one of the high end Pentium-Ms (2.0GHz or above), you can watch this with NHC (notebook hardware control).

Ckeck to verify your bios will support the new cpu. You may need the lastest bios from toshiba. I did the same thing with a similar Satellite, worked flawlessly, but do monitor the temp (as moon angel stated) . It gets a little bit warmer with the upgraded cpu.

Thank you both very much! Both for the steer and the software!

Now, was the upgrade, Skibums, did it make a noticeable difference?

Yes, it did make a noticeable difference. I only went up from a celeron 1.5 to a pentium m 1.6, but doubled the L2 cache size, so it starts a little faster and opens programs faster. I only wanted to extend the life of the laptop two more years till my daughter goes to college and will get a new one. For me it wasn't worth buying a higher speed cpu, but I see that prices have dropped since I upgraded and it looks like you can get a 1.86 or 2.0ghz for a decent price.

Well, I didn't get too crazy with the speed. I found a 1.73 Pentium Dothan core for 30 bucks. It ought to be a bit faster than my 1.5 Celery :)

Next stop will be a better screen....jeez, I must sound cheap.

Thanks again folks! I appreciate it!

Don't forget to undervolt your new processor with NHC! You may get lower temps than with your Celeron M. :D

okay...I can't get it to run when I install the proc. I have been getting blue-screens of various issues including ACPI errors and such.

any ideas for a fix on this?

Did you check to see if you needed a bios upgrade?

according to what I get from Toshiba the BIOS is "upgraded" and there isn't a newer version. 6/7/05 is the date on the BIOS from Phoenix.

If this isn't it, then could ATI have a chipset update for the chipset etc?
