I got about 30min before I gotta go pick one up so hopefully someone can chime in...

Which would be better between a Scorpio Black 500gb and MP4 500gb? Thanks!

The WD has a longer warranty and IMO, a better RMA process in the event something should go wrong.

Both issues are moot for me...so not taking warranty/RMA into the equation....

    whats the price difference?

I usually opt for WD for peace of mind. Samsung is usually cheaper though...

Then it doesn't really matter what you get. Pick up whatever is cheaper. If they are the same price, flip a coin.

Scorpio Black if they are the same price. It has longer warranty, and it is probably faster than the MP4.

I got the 750GB scorpio black..

I gotta ask, should I partition this thing or just keep it as is? Performance wise I'm wondering....

Sure partition it. Make your first partition 100GB if that's enough for you.

Why should the first partition be 100GB, and not 50GB or 200GB, or any other size?

Well if you make it 500GB you'll loose any benefit.

You want the first partition to hold OS + apps +~20%. 100GB is just a ballpark figure.

You want the first partition to be on the outer edges of the platter where read speeds and access times are the fastest.

While I would also recommend partitioning it to 100GB (initially, then shrink it to what is actually installed + ~15GB...), there really is no reason to not use any capacity that is smaller and holds your O/S. Bigger, though and you won't be getting as much oomph out of your partitioning strategy.

Partitioning/short-stroking works because it is limiting the R/W heads to the fastest part of the disk. When you start using partitions bigger than about 20% of the total capacity, the increase in responsiveness is greatly diminished in my experience.

If your O/S plus programs is 35GB (for example) and you made a 100GB partition, shrinked it after to use about 50GB of that first, fastest partition - you will gain even more in responsiveness - but, you will have the option/luxury to 'expand' the O/S partition as your software needs grow (without having to redo the whole system).

While this may seem like 'wasting' 50GB to some... in my books it is easily a fair trade to make with 750GB drives and the time savings of not having to clean install a complete system to add a little bit of room if/when my major programs or O/S (SP's, etc. ) get updated and need more room (sometimes, just for the installation part...).

This link is a little old, but it is still useful to many:
