    hey guys,

So i was careless and knocked it.....fall and hit table, and other stuff......
    My beloved LCD....

somebody said that he successfully recover the scratches, by :

using toothpaste [preferbly with whitening] + a cotton swab. Slightly dampen the tip of the swab, and put a smidge of toothpaste on the top. Work that into the LCD screen [like you'd buff a car] preferbly in a circular motion [and make sure you press down slightly whilst doing so] and let it idle for a minute. Dampen the other end of the swab with water and use that to remove the toothpaste. I'm sure you get the jidst of what I'm trying to say..just make sure you don't do anything in excess.

Is it actually okay to put toothpaste to LCD? Is there any other ways I can fix /make the scratches 'unseen'? :( I'm really sad.

so i've searched extensively and google wasnt much help.
does anyone know of a decent solution to this?

i mean its not the end of the world , but its bloody irritating to look at. It's quite severe.... any suggestion needed.

    Thanks a lot,

    TJUN

I'm not shure if you want to replace it but if you do this link has some good tips/places to buy.

    Thanks Zack,

actually I'm looking for alternatives, since a lot of ppl can make the scratches 'gone' using toothbrush, vaseline, etc. What i'm asking is, is it safe to do that to yor LCD? I'm saving up money for buying A6ja... so I'm not planning to replace it for now... :p

    Thanks,

    TJUN

Since you have nothing to loose, I'd say go ahead a try with toothpaste.

If that doesn't work, how about some rubbing compound ? It works well for paint ...

Umm yeah... this may look ridicilous, but since I'm so bad at chemistry ... isn't it toothpaste contains fluoride? And fluoride is kind of toxin rite? Can somebody give me 100% that toothpaste wont make my screen even worse?

It's likely that you've only scrached the coating and attempting additional "remedies" may only make it worse. If you are interested you should consider contacting these guys:

    http://www.screentekinc.com/index.shtml

and ask them if they can "repolarize" your scrached lcd. You may even be able to upgrade to a "pixel bright" type glossy lcd screen. Where they remove the old coating and replace it with a glossy one. The cost either way should be about $100.

Thanks warlord.. :) If it's just the coating, it should be less than 100$ right? I'm gonna ask my local dealer... see if I can get a cheap one... but hey... if I'm gonna change the coating, maybe as well try using toothpaste or other remedies before... :p not gonna hurt, right? :p

    Thanks,

    TJUN

It may or may not just be the coating. I would hope so but realize that if you've scratched through the coating you'll be applying toothpaste directly onto your lcd screen. If you've ever polished anything with toothpaste then you'd know it leaves tiny scraches. Do you want to trade some big scraches from many tiny ones?

I could tell you how to remove the coating yourself but there's too much risk that you could totally destroy the lcd. I'd say it's best left to the professionals.

Wow! Actually I never polish anything using toothpaste.. wow thanks for telling me that,Warlord . No, I would never want to trade big scratches with many small ones.. :p today i already asked my dealer, and they told me that the total cost would be 130$, so expensive, and the tell me that as long as I can use it, just use it, because the cost of repairing is almost the same as buying new one...

So... warlord, do you know the other solution beside toothpaste that works and wont cause small scratches? ( I read somewhere that someone also use vaseline.. :p ) Is it okay?

    Thanks for replying :D

That LCD is gone unless you buff the entire thing down, and possibly repair the outer coating with maybe some clear laquer or clearcoat finish. Similar to people "converting" there screens to the glossy style ones.

Toothpaste does jack. Tried it on an lcd in the past, and all it elft was a mild haze in the little area where I was using it.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this. Try just a little bit of turtle wax, and buff it in very gently. I would suggest Trying it on a spot that is not very noticable, and then if it works well, do the rest of the screen. Can't really hurt, right?

    Thanks for replying lucas... :)

Uh.. sorry I don't quite understand what turtle wax is :p ... so I just googled it.. :p . It is a car product right? So.... I think it will be okay if I put it on the coating right? But I don't know how deep my scratches are... So.. IF scrathces are deep, so it means I will be putting it directly on the LCD,not on the coating right? will it be okay? I mean... it won't affect my lcd right?

What toothpaste and other similar "scratch removers" really do is just wear down the area around the scratch so it looks like the scratch has dissapeared. If you're interested in the subject, do some reading on getting rid of iPod scratches...a whole ton of people have wanted to do that. There are also some products in that area that have varying degrees of abrasiveness - some even come in different "kits" - one kind of polish to get rid of the big scratches, and then another kind of polish to get rid of all the little scratches that the cleaner for the big scratches left. I'm not sure about using those kinds of products on a notebook LCD, but it might be worth looking into. It seems like you don't have a lot to lose anyway if you're considering replacing/repairing the screen.

I have not tried using wax personally. It should fill in the scratches making them much less noticable, but I am unsure if it will cause damage to a laptop LCD. If it was me, I would try a small area (like the size of a quarter), let it dry, and then wipe it gently to get rid of excess wax. Then I would leave it be for a day or 2 to dry. I would try it if it was my LCD, but just to cover my butt "I am not responsible for any damage this advise may cause. Use at your own risk." :D good luck

edit: Yes, turtle wax is a car product you can buy at just about any store.

Basically you remove a big scratch by making many more smaller scratches over it; then you remove those by making even more smaller scratches, etc. You repeat until the scratches are invisible to the naked eye.

What you've done is cut through a pice of plastic film. Imagine that you have a car window tinted with film. You've cut through the film exposing the glass. Can you polish or fill it to repair the cut? No. You're going to have to remove the film and replace it.

If you want to try and reduce the appearance of the gash; that may be possible. Try what lucas said. Be sure to use "carnuba wax" and stay away from anything that says cleaner ie "cleaner wax".

    cleaner = polish = scratches

That's about all I can add...

Ok, guys, thanks for clearing that up. Now I know for sure that toothpaste or other 'remedies' aren't gonna cure my lcd, just adding small 'invisible' scratches ... I'm gonna go buy some turtle wax..just like lucas said... (don't worry mate I'm not gonna sue you or something :D , you've been a great help), avoid using 'cleaner wax' like warlord said, and then try to use it. If that's not working , replace the screen.. bye bye my 130$

Thanks dietcokefiend, wipeout, zack, Lucas, Warlord, and Mattskent and the other members... for the reply and suggestions... really appreciate that. :) Thanks a lot. Great forum here! :D
