So I'm looking at a couple of different screen resolutions/sizes. What do you feel is the best? eg. I feel that 1900x1200 on a 15.4" screen is too much.

    For 13.3" 1280x800 is okay
    For 15" 1680x 1050 is my favorite.
    17" 1920x1200 is good.
for 24" 1920x1200 or higher is fine.

I am actually more fond of a high quality 15" screen than the 17" screens I have seen.
For example, my Dell 8500 I got 7 years ago has a nicer screen than my voodoo, E1505, T61, and so forth.
I must say that their are good screens, and their are bad screens. I prefer Samsung or AUO, LG is okay, but I dont like ChiMei/Hyundai screens

1440x900 on 14.1 is prefect but an awkward size to find wall papers for.

I have 15.4" 1680x1050 right now, and wish it was 1920x1200.

I think ~15" is the limit for what I consider portable; since I travel a lot with my laptop I wouldn't buy a 17" display.

I partially wish I had gotten a 17inch computer for more screen space. I am a big guy and I wouldn't think twice about buying a <15lb notebook as I would hardly feel it. the reason I went with 15 was cost and battery life.

So for something like Office, Times New Roman, 12pt, is it difficult to read?

For me a dot pitch below 0.21 is too small.

Right now using a 1280x800 13".3' notebook with a 1920x1080 26" external. I would've liked a bit more resolution on the 26", but unfortunately 1920x1080 is the maximum I can get under 30", not to mention the technical limitations for higher resolutions (dual link, HDMI 1.2 etc..).

    1920x1200 on 15".

Would love to get 1920x1200 on a 14.1" screen, and higher resolution on the 15" screen.

Wish my 24" LCD was higher resolution too (but alas, my video hardware doesn't support that). In the past year, I've noticed that most websites are have taken a dramatic move towards being much more friendly with higher resolutions.

People are needlessly afraid of high resolutions. Fonts can be scaled up to such an extent that any resolution should work just fine. The higher sampling rate of high resolution screens, for text, reduces aliasing, which means less eyestrain.

Text can be made larger by changing DPI, but it will make everything look out of proportion, I hate to work in Windows with anything other than 96dpi. Anything else looks ugly as hell :nah: .

I actually prefer a few fewer pixels generally - 1280x800 at 15.4 inches or 1440x900 at 17 inches (they're both approximately 100 dpi). Comes from years of using 640x480 on a 14-inch screen, and then 1024x768 on a 16-inch screen. So 100 dpi still seems like quite a bit. Most techies seem to prefer a higher resolution, but most non-techies seem perfectly content with 100 dpi.

It kind of depends on what you're planning to do and what your graphics hardware is as to whether more pixels would be beneficial. I can see where in programming or other editing-heavy areas (lots of files open at once), more pixels is useful. Same with in video games - if your video card can handle it without turning down settings. But the font will also be smaller, and if your video card can't handle the resolution you may end up with less crisp graphics. If you can see the different resolutions in person, do so. Dell used to have 1920x1200 17-inchers at their outlets, but those aren't in operation anymore, so I don't know where to recommend finding some.

I personally prefer 16:9 screen as it is the best one to use for watching movies. But if I have to pick one from your list, I would pick 15.4" at 1400x900. That's a happy medium.

    I picked 15.4": 1680x1050 - i think that's a perfect resolution, not too small not to big.

I choose 1680*1050. Still well readable and enough vertical space to display most website properly.

I think you'll find that Windows Vista has improved its own internal scaling engine dramatically versus some of its predecessors.

I would expect Windows7 will be even better, as manufacturers push the envelope even further.

I like 1440x900 on a 15" screen or 1680x1050 on a 17" screen and 1280x800 on a 12-14" screen. Those are perfect to me. Not too big, and not too small.

It seems like mac has hit it right on with what I like :p

OK, how about if we change it up a bit.
    15.4": 1400x900 OR 1920x1200
    17": 1400x900 OR 1920x1200.
What would your pick be for both these choices?
    I would go (from what I've heard), 15.4": 1400x900, 17": 1920x1200
EDIT: but it almost seems odd to have such a low res laptop screen for a gaming machine.

I've currently got a 1680x1050 15.4", and I think the text is too small. It's great for multitasking, and with a better quality screen, it would be fine. I'd prefer a 1440x900 15.4.
