Glossy screen: Brighter, more vivid but has glare(reflection) if under bright lights.
Matte: Dull, more relaxing to the eyes.

As for better, it varies upon one's opinions.

Glossy screens have a shine to them. For example if you have lights on in a room, you can see those lights in the glossy screen. The matte screen doesn't show those lights kind of like comparing wood to glass if that makes any sense in the way that you see reflections on each.

I don't think one is better than the other, rather its a matter of personal preference. I prefer matte, but glossy was avaiable for my lappy so I got what I they had, but my 19inch lcd is matte. Most of today's notebooks come with glossy screens. I guess it makes it look all nice and shiny on the showroom floor.

hmm, i like the idea of comparing glass to wood, hehe thanks guys.

I take it Glare is the glossy screen option, cuse the specs i keep finding are:
    15.4" WSXGA+ (Glare) (1680*1050)

Yea, 95% of notebooks are glare-type screens. Matte would be the traditional desktop TFT LCD monitors.

I miss my old GW solo 9550. It had a matte screen and I was very disappointed that when I went lappy shopping in February that I found what you said to be true.

Which is better is a matter of opinion really. Glossy screens tend to exhibit more vibrant colours, and the screen is more reflective, than a matte screen, which isn't as shiny, but the colours are "softer".

Do glossy screen use the same Active-matrix technology as Matte screens?
