I've recently bought a Samsung 530U4E, and it comes with a poor AUO B140XTN03.1 lcd with the glorius 1366x768 resolution and one of the worst color set I have seen in a while. My question is:

Can I upgrade the screen on this notebook?

I don't mind the krap resolution, just want better colors. Its only a 1ch LVDS screen so i assume that 1600x900 screens will not work. :(

Not without changing the cable. Like you said; 900p is 2-channel, without a matching cable this will not work:

    lvds 40pin 6-bit, 1ch and 2ch layout.jpg

It might work on systems that offered different resolution screens from the start, but it seems this model only had the 768p lcd which makes it unlikely they'd put in a (slightly) more expensive lvds cable.

However, assuming you acquired a 2-channel cable along with the 900p+ lcd; the gpu can handle higher resolutions, but it's then dependent on the motherboard interface whether it'd take advantage of that; only if the no-signal pins are connected on the pcb would it work. You can test this if you have a 2-channel 40pin lvds screen in another system; it's a very common connector and lcd size is irrelevant. No need to remove the old lcds; just remove connector from mb on both system and wedge the one from the test-lcd between the hinges of the Ativ. Takes only a few minutes, but does require identical format connectors on the mb end; ZIF-type or straight.

If that's too much effort for a resolution upgrade; do an advanced search for 14" 768p screens. All these are antiglare and with better contrast. Of course, dropping the antiglare would result in even better colour saturation. You might even simply remove the AG layer, it's a tad more work but the difference is spectacular. It is a glossy then and you lose the 2H hardness finish.

By the by, thought it strange there was no mention of a touchscreen even though the system has Intel's "Ultrabook" label; apparently they've only mandated that since june 2013 and this Ativ predates that by a few months.

Most 720P displays are pretty awful. I can't remember ever seeing or reading about a decent 14" 720P display. An external monitor is your best bet for a quality display. I haven't looked into to desktop hardware in a while, but Asus has a decent 21.5" IPS panel for around $100.

I have a calibrated 27" LG IPS monitor on my desk, but its scary how bad is the built-in screen when I disconnect. Blue and washed out colors. I'm coming from a Chronos 7 with a 1600x900 matte screen which was waaay better. Oh, and as I read somewhere, that these machine has a brother with touch screen but without the dedicated amd card. Would that screen fit?

I wouldn't buy Samsung ever.. My Samsung TV has touch buttons which get stuck and keep the volume at 0 if the humidity in the house gets too high, it has to be left on standby to prevent this.. My Samsung Galaxy S3 was an overheating pile of crap and battery hardly lasted.. Even 2 new batteries did nothing.. My Samsung Ultrabook's battery has worn out like nothing with hardly 300 cycles... Their products are so fail that I'm never buying anything from them again..

Its not off topic.. Samsung products are junk so don't expect anything else when you complain about their products.. Not to mention, my laptop screen also got randomly scratched just by opening and closing it...
