I wonder how it stacks up against the current Western Digital and Samsung drives.

    thats a pretty cheap price
the 320gb 5400rpm drives were much more expensive at release.
That could only mean one of two things,
    1) harddrives are becoming cheaper because of the increased demand for SSD's
    or
    2) the manufacturers are somehow making the manufacturing process cheaper, or they are just reaping less profit from each drive.

I have the new 500 GB HD from WD and it's great. Don't know how to do benchmarks though so sorry I can't be of help there.

K-TRON, I read an article from Hitachi GST and it was discussing the future of HDD capacities, and new technologies that will be deployed in the future after PMR reach its maximum capabilities.

It also said that is highly unlikely that SSD's will take over HDD's since they're expensive and there's no manufacturing ability to satisfy the demand in the case there's more interest on them. Also there are no 500GB SSD drives, and is unlikely we would see a dramatic price decrease on those drives.

I've never actually used a HDD larger than 100GB on any laptop I've owned. I've an external 5K250-160 drive to backup movies and stuff, and I'm moving soon to a 5K320 which I'm eagerly waiting.
I think because the technology to make those drives and given the competence between HDD manufacturers is fierce we're seeing those incredible low prices.

    I'm actually waiting for the 1st 1TB 2.5" drive.

The article also mentioned that by 2018 there will be HDD's of 50TB of capacity on 3.5" and 12TB on 2.5".

I read it from Toms Hardware I think, very interesting article. Laser Magnetic technology is something out there.

There's a reasonably comprehensive set of results for the WD5000BEVT in this thread. I'm still happy with mine. It runs very cool.

Yeah I want to wait for the 500 GB 7200 RPMs, but I plan on getting the WD one, it uses two platters and will run fast enough for me!
