Which would you buy? Seagate 7200.3 vs Western Digital Scorpio Black? Why? From the number of NewEgg reviews it seems Scorpio Black is the faviorite. Is it that much better? Tom's hardware seems to think the Seagate is more balanced!!!

Another question is if capacity is not what you are after would you buy 160Gb 1 platter or 320 Gb 2 platter? Cost difference between the two is negligible. I am looking for answers in terms of performance and power savings.

Personally, I would never base my purchase decisions off of reviews written by people on Newegg. I would seek out reputable, un-biased review sites for information regarding the hardware I am interested in buying. It just so happens that one of those sites would not be Tom's hardware, as they are known for skewing benchmarks to favor certain manufacturers' products.

But to answer your question, I would go with the WD Scorpio Black. Awesome hard drives, never had a problem with them.

The WD3200BEKT generates more IOPS than the 7200.3
The seagate proves faster in synthetic benchmarks like hdtune, but do not let that fool you. The WD3200BEKT is the faster drive, in terms of real life performance.

You may also want to take a look at the Hitachi 7K320. It is neck and neck with the WD3200BEKT in most scenarios and it can be found for less after rebate on websites like tiger direct, zipzoomfly or newegg
