    Seagate 7200.4 Warranty - Do they suck

    FYI, my 500gb 7200.4 died after 4 months of service. So I go to Seagate's website, fill out RMA, says only warrantied for 3 years, I figure must be a mistake.

    So I call Seagate, they tell me, no we changed warranty to 3 years Jan 23, 2009...I'm like 'funny, website says 5 years, packaging says 5 years'....so the rep was like, let me check into it. He comes back, says to reply to his email with picture of the box, a picture of the drive, then call him and as a 'courtesy' they'll extend to the full 5 years.

    So off to Fry's to p/u a new Hitachi 7K500 500GB to replace the POS Seagate, and wow, the 'new' retail packaging also says 5 years....what kind of BS are they pulling.

    Anyway, just to let you know, Seagate sucks and thinking of going to FTC, as what a scam...send me a picture of the drive and box, then I'll extend warranty....

    Anyone else had this great experience with Seagate? I know I'm done with them :mad:

    Seagate did change there warranty from 5 yrs to 3yrs
    The warranty is read from the serial number on the drive not the box.
    My 320gb seagate I sold about 2 months ago read as having a 5yr warranty on there system, and that's what I sold the drive as.
    Seagate's RMA is good. your 7200.4 isnt over 3yrs old anyways, so RMA and sell it.
    Seagate will ship you a new drive in a weeks time, and it will be packaged in a ridiculously overpackaged foam box

    I figured it would get replaced...things that agravated me were;
    - they say they'll replace with a refurb, if get a new one, with possibly better firmware, that's only warranteed for up to orginal drive date (which I guess is fair)
    - puked in 4 months
    - I also put one in my 8730w, waiting for it to puke now
    - the wasy the CSR is like send me pictures, AND call us back to extend to the advertised 5 years? Seems if I called, obviously I knew something was up...then if I send pictures, why call again? And, is it X years from date of purchase, or manufacturer, cuz I didn't register the drive, but do havec the receipt.

    I think it's somewhat suspect that if they changed the policy, as I was told Jan 3, 2009, why does website and the new retail boxes still say 5 years?
    I bet they get enough drives back, they figure most won't notice or care.

    All I know is, after this experience, it's no more Seagate for me.
    Anyway, thanks, guess can paperweight it, or EB.

    When I received my drive back from Seagate it in deed had a new sticker.
    It was labeled "Factory Certified Repaired (Refurbished)"

    I will agree that Seagate has lost there quality and reputation since there drop in quality about 2 yrs ago.
    seagate has seemed to push to get new drives out faster, but they are just fully developed. They output drives carelessly with problems, and that is what is going to push the company into the Red. It is only part of the reason why they decreased there warranty duration.

    i've had friends with stacks of dead seagate 3.5" drives..... those things are crap! WD, from my personal experience as well as from the experience of others that i have read about, WD appears to be the most reliable drives. i may be wrong, others may argue otherwise, but i've seen enough dead seagates to know that they suck .

    I have to agree, as this entire deception of warranty statements and their attitude is worthy, not to mention obvious product quality issues....

    Amazing, that no where on the website, after this year old "policy change' does it indicate the Momentus 7200.4 laptop drive has anything less than 5 years warranty...even the new ones at BestBuy, Fry's, in the green or newer 'brown eco friendly packaging' all clearly state 5 years...

    Let the revolution begin :rolleyes:

    Seagate only offers replacement using repaired disks, which is still fragile.

    Reminds me of the almost decade old Maxtor problems - which Seagate bought out a few years ago (well, they bought the Maxtor IP, anyway).

    Can a company have so much invested in IP that they cannot drop it and bring something new and better out? Seems that way with Seagate lately.

    Why is the RPM so exact? Can't we just round to 7200.. rather than 7200.4..

    7200.4 is the model line of the Seagates that have had rather severe problems for some users. Me included (returned all 4 of them).

    That's not the speed, that's just the model name. Their 7200 RPM drives went from 7200.1 (first model) to 7200.2 (second model) to 7200.3 (third model) to the 7200.4 (fourth model).

    I really dont see the problem here. They said they would fix your problem if you sent them pictures of the drive etc. You send them pictures - You get it fixed. How is that a problem?

    With all the drives that is being sold troughout the world, many different types of different years, its only fair that he asks for a proof that YOUR drive have a 5 year warranty.

    Only thing i didnt like is that they asked for a picture of the box. Who stores the box anyway. And stores them for several years? LOL

    seagate's quality is appalling...suprisingly , OEM's still use their drives... they should stop doing so untill seagte's quality goes to a lvl like that of toshiba , hitachi or Western digital..

    The problem is that they apparently changed warranty to 3 years, didn't update website in a year, nor product documentation, nor their packaging to reflect this change...then they expect you to keep the box for photo ops in case drive went bad, which according to newerr buyer deedback apparently is a 1 out of 4 proposition with these drives (based on last 6 months of feedback) http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16822148374

    Other than getting a refurb that's likey to puke again, and having to call after emailing requested photos to get warranty extended to advertised period, I guess they're not all that bad.... :rolleyes:
