Seagate Introduces Barracuda 2.5" Mobile Hard Drives with up to 5 TB capacity

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/10757...5-mobile-hard-drives-with-up-to-5-tb-capacity

"...Meanwhile, the 7 mm z-height drives ( 500 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB) are aimed at mainstream laptops and SFF desktops that need a lot of storage space."

"Now, the high-capacity BarraCuda 2.5” (3 TB, 4 TB and 5 TB) drives are rated for 130 MB/s, while the mainstream BarraCuda 2.5” (500 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB) are rated for 140 MB/s. This is still below the 145 – 169 MB/s offered by PMR-based Laptop HDDs from the company."

All these drives are well known, except for 5TB one. Anything over 2TB is 15mm high, pity.

There's also 2TB FireCuda - hybrid drive with 8GB cache, 5 years warranty and it's slim (7mm, not that it matters for me). I'm planing to get one.

I think most users Desktop and Laptop are waiting for 5tb SSD instead though.

@hmscott did you actually check the datasheets? Absolutely all specs are identical to Laptop HDD line, they are just called differently and have different model numbers. So all this brings to the table is 5TB 2.5" drive in ugly 15mm z-height form-factor.

True but 2.5 HDD are and will be replaced with SSD why not invest the R&D and Sales to SSD drives they are throwing good money after old tech and that will not revive HDD no matter even if it is to replace existing drives. Those should be SSD drive to replace existing drives that would be better investment and returns and give them more market shares and lower SSD prices where more buyers will buy them.

The same reason data centers still use (mostly) tape drives and HDDs - the technology is old, but it has predictable behaviour. SSDs are still relatively new (compared to the other two), not to mention the price difference. We'll get there eventually, but not now and my pocket is happy about that. Also it's not like there's lack of companies that throw R&D money over SSDs.

FWIW 4TB SSDs can go as low as $900 now. Oh, would I love to get my hands on one (or two) of these... But this price is still somewhat too high, to be honest. )'=

$900 is too high.. When it's $400 (or $100 per TB) then its reasonably priced..
