I just got a new Western Digital 320 GB 7200 rpm (BEKT model) for my Gateway p-7801u and it WHINES. I have never experienced this before and I am not sure if this is the "noise" that people complain about on this hard drive in the reviews on Amazon. It's high pitched squeal that happens 80% of the time it's on and is very annoying especially since I almost always work in a quiet environment.

In addition, it also has some "clicking" sounds to go along with this whine. Not as annoying as the whine but still very annoying.

Does anyone have this issue and know how to stop this whine?

Also, back up your data and use HDTune to check the SMART attributes for the drive. Its possible that you have a dud.

lol the loose capacitor... anyways , some ppl complain about this whine even in seagate but its a woosh sound... Like Mr KL said , skip seagate drives ... they fail like flies... keep the western Digital of try finding a 500GB hitachi 7K500... fastest mobile hard drive and seems to have less problems then the western digital drive...
