I'm replacing my Hitachi 160GB hard drive with a 320GB. My choices are narrowed down to the Seagate Momentus 7200.3 and Hitachi Travelstar 5K320.
Zipzoom.com has the 7200 rpm Seagate for $89.99, and Newegg has the 5400 rpm Hitachi for $69.99 after rebate.
I realize that a 7200 rpm hard drive for only $20 more should be a no-brainer. However, I've read some concerns about heat with the Seagate, and that is a concern for me with our southern summers. I had about decided to order the Hitach, but wanted some more input before I made the order.
How should these two hard drives compare with each other in terms of speed, noise, heat, durability, etc.? I've read that the Hitachi is pretty fast for a 5400 rpm drive. Would I notice much difference between the two?
Thanks,
Bill

Your concerns over heat should not continue. I've shoved the Seagate in netbooks (acer aspire one, Asus 1000H) and it hasn't run much hotter than the 5400.5, maybe a few f at most.
I noticed a pretty good speed difference between the 5400.5 and 7200.3, I would think the 5k320 would be the same. -
The Seagate runs really REALLY cool. Heat will not be an issue. My Seagate idles below 30C, and never goes over 40C stressed in a warm room.

I purchased the 200gb version of the Seagate Momentus, not much differences heat wise when compared to the 80gb 5400 Seagate.

Thanks guys. Just ordered the Seagate Momentus 7200.3 ST9320421ASG from buy.com for $96.99 with free shipping. Within an hour and a half after ordering, buy.com increased the price to $109.47 shipped.
