Seagate Momentus 7200.4 thread

oh well i just bought the gravity sensor model off of dell's site. they seem to be the only retailer that has 7200.4's in stock. price is the same as newegg's i guess 139.99 free shipping too.

well if your harddrive is full, then go for a new harddrive. you dont replace components just because they're not the highest spec.

 

alert! Dell says this is the 3.5" desktop drive, which would explain why it's in stock. I can't find the 2.5" in stock anywhere right now.

 

what are you talking about? it's listed under SATA 2.5

 

I agree, the info is contradictory. Make your own assumptions. The sales associate could have just told me incorrect info, but I'm reporting what they said.

 

how can they sell it as a self service notebook upgrade harddrive if it's a 3.5" drive? this is definitely the notebook drive. i only found out about dell carrying it because some guy on newegg posted it.

hey guys. posted this question in the HD Tune thread and thought I'd bring the general question here as well:

I have a laptop with 2HDDs running in Raid 0. 4200rpm'z. best access time speeds are in the low 19ms range. not very good.

My question is this: I just ordered a pair (2) of those 500GB 7200.4 Seagate Momentus HDDs to replace the 500GB 4200RPM hdd's that came with the laptop...but will I see any meaningful increase in overall performance from the 7200rpm configuration? with access times, in particular?

Because it wouldn't be major, I'll save my $300 and wait a couple years for the SSD's to drop in price.

oh, and FYI: the HDDs at Dell are the 2.5" variety.

agree! i also cannot find anywhere in stock now. it is really a surprise to hav this in stock at dell. mayb another person to email again to c is the info correct?

 

i spoke with someone via online chat, called in and spoke to someone to confirm, and compared the size measurements and specifications with other known laptop HDDs.

the one being sold by Dell is a laptop HDD.

nvm just got off of chat with dell rep. its' not backordered but i wont get it till next thursday. so much for 2nd day shipping.

well dont you still get a manufacture's warranty from seagate? either way i doubt these things fail that easily.

 

but i tink, since dell get it, seagate might jus edit the hdd warranty date to 1year.

I just chatted online with a Dell representative and they confirmed that it is a Dell HD and has a 1 year warranty.

Soooo, I have 1 small question. Which one should I chose, WD 7200rpm 320gb or the Seagate 500gb 7200rpm.
I dont care about the extra capacity of the seagate eventhough its nice. I'm planning on dividing the drive in a C-drive with 100 gb and a D drive with the rest.
Which one will perform better in games like Cod4 and Left4dead?
And which of the drives is more silent.

I have had the WD for 2 months before i dropped my notebook and the drive died Was really happy with its performance, except for the sound, wasnt really silent.
But right when I wanted to buy the WD again I saw the new Seagate. so thats why i was wondering which one would perform better and which one is more silent.

 

if compare transfer rate, seagate is faster.
if compare access time, wd is faster.

avg. access time: WD is faster (but this is unfair because 320GB vs. 500GB)

regardless of the noise, because I don't know which drive is quieter, the seagate drive is superior.

probably not, because it's most likely a OEM drive.

you can't buy the drive at the moment, sadly. You'll have to wait a few days or weeks until Seagate sends the second batch out, don't know what 'problems' they currently have.

 

hopefully we know wats the problem, or else very mad tat the arrival date keep dragging...

Alert: apparently, the drive being sold by Dell is OEM (basically, Dell bought them from Seagate and put their own label and firmware on them, making them Dell Momentus 7200.4 drives) and are thus only supported by Dell's warranty policy on HDDs.

Seagate offers a 3-5 year warranty on their HDDs.

Dell offers only a 1-year warranty on this same HDD.

Keep this order ONLY if you don't mind having the 1-year warranty. but to be honest, I'm canceling my order today (I don't think it has shipped yet).

I just got off the phone with Seagate Warranty support, who recommended I get it elsewhere. I asked him if my Dell Momentus died 2 years from now, who would I run to? He said, "Best Buy...Staples...Wal-Mart...lol"

there you have it. He also said they've seen very few 7200.4 returns. all firmware issues have been resolved to his knowledge, though there were some with the Baracuda's recently.

no problem. I did cancel mine earlier today, FYI. a 1-year warranty on a bleeding-edge HDD is silly.

 

There is no definitive answer to this because afaik there hasn't been posted any non synthetic benchmark yet.

Most likely the 7200.4 will be faster than WD 3200bekt, but there is a possibility that the WD is faster.

 

For me, I don't mind buying HDD with 1 year warranty as long as they are new. In addition, when your HDD dies in the 4th-5th year, I wouldn't bother return them to replacement as the price for 500GB is already very cheap like a dirt at that time. You wouldn't even want your laptop anymore

I build a lot of storage systems. Here is my advice:

1. Make sure the HDD is new or at least recertified by the factory itself (not third-party).

2. New HDD with 1 year VS New HDD with 3yr-5yr warranty:
They both have same quality and could become defective anytime you don't know. Best practice is: after you installed HDD, run FULL/EXTENDED diagnostic test (using tools from manufacturer, I found that WD diagnostic test to be the best). This will test sector by sector (takes quite long to finish). If the HDD passed this test, this HDD is good to go and you're unlikely to see anything bad.

 

I hear you, big, but my experiences have taught me differently.

My concern isn't about year 1. It's about year 2. I've had 2 HDDs die on me in the last 24 months in the second year of ownership. Both were under warranty and both were replaced. I also have several others that have been fine for years...but do I want to take the chance? I didn't.

 

so better to be safe than sorry.. take those wit 3 years warranty.

 

I managed to get one of the 7200.4 drives before they became unavailable and used it to replace a WD 320GB 7,200 drive.
So far, it has behaving perfectly and is very quiet.
For what it is worth, it scores a 5.9 on Vista's HD performance, which is the same as the WD.
I'm not sure the length of warranty is that big an issue. I have had drives fail before, but by the time they did, they were relatively obsolete and I have always replaced them with larger drives.
I am getting a Gateway P-7805u with a X9100 cpu and 9800M GTX video and will install 2 Seagate 7200.4 drives in a RAID 1 array as soon as I can get another drive.

 

I prefer Hitachi HDD for now...
it seems Seagate has been thru a lot of troubles lately.

 

I'll wait until the price drops.
It'll be interesting to see what Hitachi and WD have to offer.

I'll wait 1 week, if I still cant find the Seagate in stock somewhere, I'll just go with the WD again.

Was wondering what you meant with "very quiet". Is it more silent then the WD drive?

 

Can someone who has the 7200.4 please run real benchmarks like pcmark or vantage
