Agreed. I just couldn't be bothered and ordered the 5K500.B
-
-
I have ordered 5K500.B as well. If I ever want to get something that is way better than this one, I could always use it as a very large portable one
-
It's a pity that the ETA is so soon, but my greatest priority is the size, not the speed. And who knows if Seagate will delay that again
-
So, K-Tron, I assume the new HDD that Hitachi will be released are:
1. 7200RPM 500GB
2. 5400RPM 750GB
Am I correct? -
'scuse me if I missed this earlier in the thread, but K-Tron's certainty about the product development schedule of Hitachi comes from ...?
-
"Hello Christopher,
Thank you for contacting Hitachi Global Storage Technologies.
We're in the development of 500GB travelstar SATA 7200RPM drive but we
don't have the advisory yet when it will be released.
Thank you for patronizing Hitachi products.
Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.
Regards,"
from further emails to a contact I have, they will be coming shortly as the last firmware issues are being resolved
As for the 5400rpm drives, no more information has been gathered
K-TRON -
So basically they are in the same place Seagate is with 7200.4 - resolving firmware issues, the only difference is that Seagate does that after it has released the drive? ;P
-
That is correct
Seagate likes to jump the gun and get the publicity with a new product, which ends up having major problems. Then the public hates them. Then seagate comes out with new drives and some people are happy again. And the cycle seems to just repeat for them
It is rare for Western Digital or Hitachi to jump the gun, since quality and reliability are more of a concern
K-TRON -
Well, fair enough. But with all due respect, I imagine every hard drive manufacturer on the planet could send you a pretty similar email with equal veracity. It doesn't necessarily mean we're likely to see them "in the next month or so." The devil it seems is in the (firmware) details.

So, now I also canceled the order of my two Seagate Momentus 7200.4 drives. I can't wait any longer, need the new drives, and am afraid that the Seagate won't be noticeable faster to justify the higher price, higher power consumption, louder noise and hotter temperatures.
That's why I've bought the Hitachi 5k500.B, slower than the WD, therefore quieter, cooler and consumes less power, and I don't think that the speed difference (slower access times on the Hitachi) will be really noticable. -
K-Tron have an insider at Hitachi that gave him the news about the new HDD development.
The leaked info from the person so far has been accurate because he said about the joint forces of Hitachi and Intel in developing SSD and few weeks later, there's a press release of it in Hitachi web site.
-
I was hoping Hitachi will release 5400RPM 750GB on the same date with the 7200RPM 500GB though...
-
Hi.
This is my first post, I've made a quick search into this thread but I've not found an answare to my question...
I can buy a Western Digital WD3200BEKT and a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9320423AS about at the same price.
I know they are of two different generations.
What do you suggest?
Thank you very much
-
Buy the WD...
I know I would... -
you guys must not have seen this thread:

HP selling the Scorpio Blue (500GB) for $46.
As much as I enjoyed my 5K500.B's, I got 2 of these for one of those. the 5K's are getting RMA'd. -
Thanks a lot xor01... do you think the 7200.4 is not a higher category?
Anyone knowes the difference between these two HD (HW in general, plates organization, power consumption...)?
I trust you xor01
, but other suggestions?
bye simon -
All that information is floating around NBR. In short, while newer, the 7200.4 isn't recommended because it isn't properly optimized and was rushed into the market. It doesn't have great performance as one would expect of the newest and largest capacity 7200RPM drives. That is why the last generation 7200RPM drives and current generation 5400RPM drives are recommended still.
-
...and considering the Scorpio Blue (500GB) is $46 at HP, the pricetag for even a strong-performing 7200.4 can't be justified for most.
-
Where do you see this price at hp? I can't even find where they sell separate hard drives.
-
Look at the deals forum here.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/forumdisplay.php?f=12 -
Ok, it's right but I'd like to have an HD with desktop performances... so I've considered buying a 7200rpm and not 5400rpm.
I don't worry of power consumption because my laptop is almost always attached at the power supply...
Edit: finally I've bought a Western Digital WD3200BEKT, I think a balanced choice.
Thank you very much for your kindness
-
7200RPM 2.5" HDD still not on par with its 3.5" counter-part.
-
True, but it's closer, due to having faster access times than the 5400 rpm drives.
-
actually, they're not really close. but who's expecting desktop performance?
-
cipnet99 does... read his post above

A new Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB Notebook Hard Drive review has been posted over at Legit Reviews today. They compared the drive to eight other 2.5" drives and included 7200.2, 7200.3 and WD Scorpio blue and black drives. They used firmware 0002SDM1 for benchmarking on the ST9500420AS (no G-Force Protection).
http://www.legitreviews.com/article/967/1/
The 7200.4 looks pretty good, but I'm shocked it lost to the 7200.3 in some of the write tests. -
Thanks for posting!
Too bad they did 6 synthetic benchmarks and 0 real life benchmarks.
What I found even more shocking is that the 7200.4 lost a write test against the 5400rpm Hitachi 5k500.b on I4U:
http://www.i4u.com/full-review-529.html -
good review. but not good enough to justify me paying ~200% more for it than the Scorpio Blue.
-
actually its Toshiba drives - too bad I was going to order one more hdd.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=378231&page=3 -
Sofar I haven't seen justification for paying even 1% more. WD5000bevt may actually be faster than 7200.4. Too bad no one has done any real life testing.
-
about that deal for $45.60, I just called them:
warranty: 90days
brand: Toshiba -
90 days? Hey, I don't mean to rain on your parade but they're not gonna last ninety hours!
-Hudson, Aliens (1986)
(altered quote
)
-
some people have definitely received WDs Blue's. maybe the deal is for Toshiba's now, but it clearly wasn't always.
-
Any idea if they're going to go back to WDs again?
-
none. I've no idea why they switched or what the meaning of all this is.
All I know for sure is that everyone ordered from that same link. I know people got Toshiba's. I know people that got Western Digital's.
I'm sure subsequent research will produce some kind of rhyme or reason. -
So you keep going on about how synthetic testing isn't worth anything and you need "real life testing"... what exactly is this real life testing you want done?
They're gonna come in here just like they did before and they're gonna come in here and they're gonna come in here and they're gonna kill us!!!!!!!!!! -
OcUK has now got them in stock and mine shipped today
-
Cool. Can you do some real world benchmarks against your current hard drive?
Like copying a 5GB folder or opening a 40MB tiff in Photoshop. More examples. -
is it worth waiting for the g-force version?
-
I will see what I can do tomorrow. -
Depends. G force protection locks the heads of the drive when there is a sudden movement, like falling or bumping into something. It only helps when your laptop is running though. When your laptop is off, the heads are already locked.
I usually don't take FFS. (free fall sensor = g force)
PS. Some laptops already have FFS like Lenovo T, Sony Z, Macbooks. -
If you are looking for the AS version, not the G-force, check out:
http://www.thenerds.net/SEAGATE.Sea...ode=cii_9324560&cpncode=23-37475832-2&affid=3
They are showing 135 in stock at $132.99 plus shipping.
I am not buying, but thought you all might like this possible source. -
Newegg has the 7200.4 in stock again for $149.99 with free shipping if anyone is interested. Now the next question is if these are updated with better firmware?...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148374 -
Haha... Its price went up instead of going down over time... Interesting...
The first batch was sold for $139.99+free shipping at newegg.
Now we need someone to tell us the firmware version of the second batch (as hamyblam mentioned).
-- -
my 7200.4 order was updated by Dell for the 20th. 7 days. we'll see.
-
Demand for these things, even though there have been been problems with them, is way higher now. Low supply + high demand = higher price.
-
well...glad I ordered mine for $110/drive from Dell back in March.
-
If you can, it may be better to cancel the DELL order and purchase it from newegg. Newegg drives have 3 yr warranty whereas Dell drives have only 1 yr.

Could any one tell me what sorts of symptoms these HDD's show when they begin to fail? I have two of the very first ones from Neweeg and I'm doing video transfers. Once in a while the video acts like it pauses for no reason for a couple seconds, then starts again. Could this be caused by the HDD?
