Assuming your Vertex has the same firmware as the Vertex in the laptopmag review, this would mean your Seagate 7200.4 is a lot faster than the 320GB/7200rpm drives.

    Three questions:
Does your 7200.4 have the early firmware or the later firmware?
    Vertex firmware?
How many files were in the 4.97GB folder?

Update: My Momentus order from Dell was delayed until 6/12.

we're coming up on 3 months since the original order was placed.

I just ordered two 5K500.B's for $168 together, that was the nail in the coffin for me. These are almost twice as much.

Compared to 1x Momentus 7200.4 500GB for the same price you'd pay, you DO get twice as much, not just "almost" :D

Not sure where I check the firmware for the Seagate, I know the Vertex is the old firmware (v1.10) because I still havent installed the update yet (was waiting until I got home) I bought the Seagate from Dell 6 weeks ago if that helps. I have since deleted the folder, but there were approximately 120 files in it, music, photos (Nikon NEF), 1.5 movies (dont ask), various excel and word docs.

Thanks, that's very interesting. Based on my own testing, I expect that Laptopmag has way more and smaller files in their folder.

The fewer, large files will make the difference between the 7200.4 and the Vertex smaller.

Knowing that makes the results incomparable.

I have the original firmware. This is the best mechanical hard drive I have ever used. I cannot hear it running or seeking (and no acoustic suppression enabled), the fluid bearings are smooth as butter, it is super fast, runs fairly cool and is super fast. I don't know what they did between the 7200.3 which I had as well, but they surely worked hard, because the 7200.3 I had vibrated a fair amount and clicked a lot. I'm completely sold on Seagate at the moment, and this is from a user from waaaay back then with Cyrix so called 486 computers, Intel 286s etc when Seagate had horrible problems with reliability

people in the past have said they've tried. that they don't provide an upgrade path for firmware. that some manufacturers have done so in the past, WD in particular.

In my case, this does not seem to be a problem; my 7200.4, bought from NCIX in February, has been running just fine. Just like with every hard drive I own and handle, I back up critical data on a routine basis, and I run checkdisk and HD Tune once a month.

It is true that Seagate allows end-user firmware updating, but only for some select models that had officially addressed firmware issues, such as the pilot batch of Barracuda 7200.11's and ES.2's. However, for the sake of relevance, Seagate will not release the firmware for the Momentus 7200.4 nor support the update of said model. Us 0001 owners would need to buy the 0002 revised 7200.4 if we want it that badly. Speaking from my tax bracket, buying the revised version of the same hard drive to replace an already normally functioning hard drive is out of the question. I would rather wait for the 7200.5 to release if I were to spend money on a new hard drive.

Rumor was that there's a performance difference between the two revisions.

This has not been confirmed with some objective benchmarks.

Yes 7200.3 is slower than 7200.4.

You don't need the G-Force version because your laptop has a built in Free fall sensor.

Considerably. The issue would be space, but if you don't need the room and can slim down your installs, go for it.

I was under the impression the laptops themselves do not have a free fall sensors. The laptops advertised with them e.g. HP 3D DriveGuard just ships with harddrives with a free-fall sensors and have software to support the harddrive free-fall sensor.

When i was playing with an old 7200 RPM 80GB SATA harddrive, HP 3D driveguard said the harddrive is not supported and driveguard is not enabled. Whereas for 7200.3 as well as the stock factory drive it said it is supported and enabled. This is why i came to this conclusion.

A lot faster if you keep empty space on your SSD. The SSD will slow down if you use more than 80% I believe. Same goes for a HDD by the way, but you won't be buying a 30GB HDD.

How much faster: This review answers that question. The Fujitsu HDD in the review can be compared to the 7200.4. The difference will be very small.

I'm not sure actually, I was assuming it because every Vaio I owned had it (SZ, Z, TZ).

But maybe the bigger ones don't? It should be on the website.

Oh well, not that it matters a lot, it only works when your laptop is on. And I guess you won't be walking around much when your 18.4" AW is on :)

It's now $95.99 at the Dell Website w/free 2nd business day shipping (although it won't be shipped until mid-end of June). See my post in the Tech Bargains: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=385356
(I hope it's okay that I'm linking to my other post)

    Go for 250GB or 500GB.

I would not go for 320GB because the benchmarks that someone posted were not so good. (that was of a 320GB Hitachi 5K500.b)

I don't feel the need nor quite want to spend *almost* double for 500GB, so I will be settling for the 320GB model..

I was just wondering if performance-wise and in respect to battery life, it will perform like its bigger brother? Does it also come in the 0002 revision now?

Who actually.. got the 320GB model because EVERYBODY on the internet seems to talk about the 500GB only incl. reviewers.

Phil, I don't think bringing up that a 320GB drive from a different manufacturer of a different class (5400RPM) is a good argument against getting the 320GB model of the 7200.4..

7200.4 500 GB received today... manufactured 12th of May, firmware 0002SDM1, so probably as new as it is going to get.
Maybe it will fit the connector in my external USB hdd box, but as it's USB it wouldn't be too fair to benchmark (It also has esata but i have no cable).
At some point, hopefully tomorrow, i can have it mounted as a system drive with windows xp, ubuntu and os x, and then i can do some benchmarks of whatever one would like :)

I don't think you will be sacrificing much in the way of performance getting a 320gb instead of the 500. We haven't seen any real benchmarks of the 0002 revision yet from forum members here, but if it has similar performance to the 0001, then the 320gb should be close to the 500gb. Most of the benchmarks people here have done between the 0001 revision and the 7200 rpm 320gb drives have been very close. But again I can't say for certain if performance has changed any between revisions 0001 and 0002.

    lhsonic ; xor01 ;

I have got wd scorpio black 320GB and fujitsu 320GB
both are quite noisy and wd vibrating fujitsu not ..
wd is more faster and both hdd's annoyingly klicking
thaty's why i wanto try 250GB (one platter half less noise) )
there will not be performance difference if you buy 250 320 or 500 capacity from any brand it can be but tiny only
between brands are considerably speed dif.

If you read the thread about the 320GB Hitachi 5K500.b performance you will see that there's a good chance that the same thing may apply to Seagate 7200.4 320GB.

Whenever I buy hard drives I tend to go for the ones that use the full platter capacity. In this case 250GB or 500GB.
