Many websites have been saying 'available in 2-3 weeks' for a couple of months now![]()
SWomething similar happened two years ago with the Seagate 7200.4.
I still expect it in september though.
-
Is stock now... supposedly.

Showing out of stock now. We have been waiting for this drive since May, haven't we?
-
Yes it's been a long time. This is taking as long as with the Seagate 7200.4 500GB. Let's hope this one is better. I wonder if they were really in stock. It showed 6 when I posted.
Edit: says in stock here too

Notebookcheck has benchmarked it! By the looks of it it's not spectacular. Samsung HM640JJ seems to do better, as far as synthetic benchmarks go.
But it would get very interesting if Seagate added a 4GB (or larger) NAND to it...
Great list by the way: http://www.notebookcheck.com/Notebook-Festplatten-HDD-SSD-Vergleich.22087.0.htmlAttached Files:

Thanks for posting the benchmark -- not very impressive, but then again I wasn't expecting it to beat the current mechanical champions -- the 7K500 and the WD5000BEKT. Samsung HM640JJ is also worth a mention in there as you noted.
It is definitely the fastest 750GB notebook drive available, however -- a good secondary storage device. -
Seagate seems to be the first to release a product, but almost never first to market (i.e. availability). Again, WD beats them to the punch (only 8MB cache though ???):

edit: NM, it's a 5400RPM drive... my bad. -
My HD Tune results look quite good.

That is much more like it, as fast as other 7200's out there at least. The question is though how are the platters? I am wondering if Seagate learned their lesson with the 500GB platter set and are now going to keep the vibration down.
If they have another fiasco like they have had with the 7200.4's and even the XT's it will really trash their reputation, as if it hasn't suffered enough...... -
Seagate's rep. has been trashed for years ;D
-
I must say it seems very quiet sofar. Performance also seems good.

How is the vibration compared to a 7K500/WD5000BEKT?
-
Tough question. I haven't fully fixed the 7200.5 and it's been a while since I had the 7K500 and WD5000bekt here.
I think the XT vibrated the most, WD5000bekt and 7200.5 vibrate less. Hitachi 7K500 might be the quietest.
Or maybe the 7200.5 is as quiet as the 7K500. -
Anyone find them available for purchase in the USA? Basically I'm looking for the largest 9.5mm HDD I can find to put in my eSATA enclosure. WD makes a 5400RPM 750GB one, but this Seagate costs less and has faster spindle speed, so I'd prefer it if I could get it.
-
Try Google Shopping.
-
How does it compare with the 7500 5400 rpm drive from wd currently available?
-
I can confirm the Seagate 7200 rpm is much faster.
On second impression the 7200.5 might be one of the quietest 7200rpm drives I've experienced. It does have a slight vibration like most 7200rpm drives do. -
Where did get that phil? in EU?
-
Through a contact in the US. I don't believe anyone has it in Europe.
-
ya the 2nd link phil posted has them in stock and 99$
I think thats 9 more than the wd 750 the only thing ive found for sale thats comparable.
Its about 30 cheaper than the 500 gb xt.
seems like a good deal to me. -
Alternatively Samsung HM640JJ is probably as fast (if not faster) and costs less per GB.
-
Thanks, I have, but its not the most accurate. It gives a lot of places that list it but not if they have it in stock actually. And pricewatch only shows external 750GB ones.
EDIT:
I completely overlooked this post, thanks. They do have them in stock but they're $109 now.
I guess I'll wait a bit and see if it drops in price. I know $9 isn't much, but I'm tired of overpaying for items that I can get cheaper a few weeks later.
-
I have found the samsung drive now for 90
this drive for 109
and the wd for 90
I think that does show the samsung drive is the best deal and the wd is definitely the worst.
These prices change daily btw. -
I am not ready benchmarking yet but if you're looking for the fastest hard drive the Seagate 750GB is probably not the one. It's a decent performer though.
-
What is the part number of the samsung drive? Any place I've looked for a 750GB Samsung shows the desktop one.
-
He probably meant Samsung HM640JJ
-
Finally got mine in last week, going as my 2nd drive my my rig. Works just fine.
-
its a 640 gb 7200 rpm drive
-
Oh ok thanks. I decided I should go with 1TB anyhow. Will probably just end up going with the Toshiba Canvio 1TB USB.
-
I need the disk space, and you've talked me into it! Most places are "out of stock," so I paid a bit more, but ordered one today from Other World Computing for $124.99:
750GB 2.5" Seagate Momentus 7200RPM SATA 9... (ST9750420AS) at OWC
It'll be here Thursday, and I'll swap out the stock drive and install this in my MacBook Pro 2.8GHz i7 with hi res screen and 8GB ram. Can't wait! -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Since you need the disk space, this is the best option right now.
However, I don't know too much about the Mac's - are you able to partition it so that 'most' of the capacity is used for your data - with the O/S and apps on the smaller, fastest part of the drive?
This should provide you with the fastest user experience on your 'Book. -
the 640 gb 7200 rpm samsung drive is 65$ now at newegg.
Id go for that. I will be on the 15th actually. -
Unfortunately, it's jumped back up to $90+shipping. Hopefully it'll drop back down before too long.

Dang. I was thinking about getting one yesterday. Guess that will have to wait. -
How would this drive, in terms of speed, compare with the
Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD10TPVT 1TB 5200 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive
Newegg.com - Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD10TPVT 1TB 5200 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive -
The Seagate is a lot faster.
-
The Seagate will also fit in more notebooks; don't forget that that drive is 12.5 mm high, and not the more standard 9.5 mm high.
-
Hmm I see. Thanks for the replies.
Any ideas if it will go on sale at newegg anytime this month? -
jus brought the hdd.. this is the proper benchmarks.

Seems all positive, I'm getting this for my storage NAS
-
It's a good drive but not very fast....
-
I'm taking it primarily for it's storage capacity, but if there is an alternative (2.5" and 750+ GB) please let me know
-
If you don't need speed, there are 5400RPM 12.7mm 1TB 2.5" drives available.
-
I wouldn't say that I don't need speed. I'm sort of going for a balanced mix of speed and storage, and chose 750gb as the minimum storage requirement, and the Seagate Momentus seemed to set a certain level for spee. Although their SSD-hybrid 500GB drive should be a lot faster, it doesn't meet my storage req.
So is there any other drive as fast or faster as this with minimum 750 GB storage? -
If you use for NAS why don't you get some 3.5'' instead?
-
I wondered that too but assumed it was a 2.5" disk system.
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Well, for a NAS, usually the bottleneck isn't the hard drive speed, right? Try out the 1TB HDDs Wingnut mentioned.
And if you don't mind losing 110GB, the Samsung HM640JJ is a great performer. -
For that it will do. Although I agree 3.5" would be much better.
-
Why would 3.5" be better ?
-
The cost per GB is much lower. The available capacities much higher.
