I recently ordered a laptop, got the cheapest drive (250gb) because last time I ordered a "7200rpm" drive with larger capacity I paid as much as buying it myself would have cost, but the drive performance was crappy (compared to my expectation of a reasonably fast drive).

Was wondering if there had been any announcement or rumors for a Seagate Momentus Hybrid drive with a higher capacity than 500gb. I ask because the reviews I read on the 500gb seem to have come out about a year ago.

Also, they seem to be the fastest laptop hard drives you can get without going to a much, much more expensive ssd, right?...

yes it is fast. its sad there is no competition, so there is no incentive for them to release one with a bigger solid state portion or larger capacity :( so its unlikely they'll do so soon, much better to milk the market while you can, from a business strategy point of view

    Right.

Samsung also had a hybrid HDD with a 5400RPM spindle size, but it seems to have disappeared. You can find some info on it, and maybe even a PC Mag review or something like that, but Samsung no longer has a product page for it.

I was reading that seagate bought out samsungs hdd sector and samsung is going to continue supplying the nand chips in seagates hybrid drives. So they will "eventually" grow.

    Heres more on that:

Just like Western-Digital brought Hitachi HDD Team. So it is really down to Seagate vs. Western Digital vs. Maxtor (but Maxtor hasn't been significant these days in the laptop sector) vs. Toshiba.

WD to merger with Hitachi GST

It is not the fact that they lacked competition per se. It is more that the drives themselves weren't the most reliable thing in the world and I guess it was a pain for them to continue developing it when they knew the flaws with it and amount of criticism from the consumer market.

I was very close to getting one, but I don't want to waste a Ben Franklin on a drive that could break down a year in. I rather use old, reliable technology instead.
