    Hi all,

    I have a Seagate Momentus XT 2.5" 500Gb Hard drive which seems to be beeping when plugged in. The computer will not see the connection

    I've tried it on multiple computers, and still the same issue.

    I believe the hard drive is gone - but maybe anyone knows of any DIY methods of fixing it? I just need it to work for long enough for me to back-up all the files.
    If not, does anyone know of any hard drive recovery services in the UK?

    Thanks,
    RT

    Try connecting with an external power supply if you can get one, otherwise try tapping the drive on the side very lightly or twisting the drive as it attempts to spin up; IIRC beeping is usually because of a stuck head assembly / platter motor, and the physical shock will unstick it for the split second it needs to get going.

    Of course, do so at your own risk of further damage, but I've had both methods work for me.

    You may have only one chance at this...

    I agree that tapping is one of the techniques I use, but before I do that;

    Put the drive (by itself) inside a sealed sandwich bag with as little air as possible in the freezer for at least a few hours (I leave it overnight... 12+ Hrs).

    After the 'freezing', take out the drive, leave it for about 10 minutes with the bag still on, then remove the drive from the bag and connect it to the fastest connection you have to a computer that is ready, waiting and with the capacity needed to empty that drive of the important data it contains.

    As mentioned; usually, only one chance at this - there is no 'testing'... connect the drive 'frozen', if it isn't readable, tap as suggested (on a long axis, not with the drive 'flat') and immediately try to spin it up again.

    Once running, keep it connected and download the important data first - then get the rest.

    Good luck.

    Thanks for the replies!

    I'll give these methods a go and see if I can get the data out. I'll post my result here :)
