My Seagate 500 GB desktop drive that I just bought like 5 days ago died overnight, woke up this morning to find my computer saying "DISK BOOT FAILURE"

Could not get the computer to recognize the drive at all, tried all my SATA ports and got nothing.

    Bang up job seagate.

Now I am back on my 4 year old WD raptor that makes my computer blue screen like 15 times a Hr. Worst part is me being the idiot I am I think I threw away the receipt cleaning up my desk.. So now I have to RMA the thing to Seagate and spend the next week or two on a computer that's constantly blue screening.

I knew I should have went with another Hitachi.

Sorry to hear man. I've had good luck with Seagate. But ultimately, luck is the keyword sometimes.

Good luck. I hope the RMA goes quick & smooth.

I have heard nothing but good things about Seagate, so I probably just somehow got a junk drive, Definitely not a good first experience with a company though.

On my Medion laptop the HDD failed twice (at 1 year intervals) and the CD/DVD drive failed, got them replaced under warranty.

On my Sony SZ the battery failed after about 2 weeks of use.

    These things happen.

I think its bad luck. Normally you get a good product..

All the best with your drive!

I've seen Seagates crash, but out of all the Seagates I've had, I've never had a problem.

Sucks that yours crashed. I wish you better luck with your next drive.

    =/

I have to say this is the soonest that I have ever had a hardware component fail, I have had hard drives fail before, but not within the first week.

The cable to my 2-year-old Seagate FreeAgent go 120Gb is beginning to fray. The cable works fine otherwise (for now), but I have yet to find a replacement cable. The cable is unique in that there's a mini-usb on one end, but TWO full-size USBs on the other end.

Based on the OP's experience with Seagate, it looks like I won't be buying Seagate anytime soon. And I thought SimpleTech was bad!

Can we put a magnet to it, while we're at it?

You know I've always heard nothing but good about Seagate myself, but my last desktop ate through so many Seagate drives I had finally decided something was wrong with it until I bought a WD and have had it for two years now zero issues.. dunno.

    Hmm...
1 mini USB & 2 full USB, I've got that on the cable of my external portable HDD...

Why the 2 full USBs though, I don't get it....

It might be using the second USB port to draw extra power. I've heard of some drives using that instead of a wall adapter.

Just wondering, did you try with another SATA- cable before coming to the conclusion?
