What is the problem with this hard drive ?
I have just recived the most amazing Asus F3Jc note book, but its being ruined solely by the terrible high pitched whine of this hard drive.
Now, that in its self would not be such a problem, if that drice supported acoustic managment, however it does not. (Ive tried NHC, IBM & Hitachi disk managers).
What a waste![]()
(Is there a hack anyware to "force" acoustic managment settings ?).

u sure it is the Harddrive? coz seagate HDD runs very quiet. if it is indeed whining loudly, then go have it check out, i'am guessing it is a faulty HDD.
-
Yep, I set the spin down in NHC to "1", as soon as that kicks in the noise stops, to it has to be the hard drive, no doubt.
-
if the unit (HDD) is not faulty, could the sound be because of grounding problem? my external (seagate) HDD creates whining noise through the speaker when i first turn it on.
otherwise.. if its really loud; i think that the HDD is faulty, it may be worthwhile to have it checked out. -
Its pitch rather than volume, I think its inherent with that brand.
-
The seagate momentus is known for being rather quiet. I'd definitely bring it back to where you bought it to have it checked out.

I have (2) Seagate Momentus 120gb (RAID-1) in my notebook now, awesome and quiet.

Strange as it may sound, my dad cant hear the whine but my mum can ?
So Im not imagining it.
Im most unimpressed that they have fallen foul of a "patent" which means the consumer has no access to advanced drive features such as AAM acoustic managment. This blows frow a noise sensitive end users point of view.
Not many Laptop manufactorers or retailers advertise the brand of Hard Disk with their adverts, no matter what make they are, why is this ?
You can imagine there being a "glut" of drives that are non-configurable going cheap to various companies, whens a good deal not such a good deal ?,
when you have no control
There is a link on silentpcreview where you can hear audio samples of various disks, you can hear the whine on the seagate tested a mile away, as I said before its not volume, its pitch. The samsung on the other hand sounds excellent, it sound like a drive thats had acoustic managment applied to bring very slightly under the threshhold of "whine", which is spot on in my case
Seagate ST98823AS Momentus "WHINE".
