Hello. On Bens bargains, there was the Seagate 400GB Ultra ATA HDD w/ 16MB Buffer on sale for 110 w/ free shipping on Outpost.com.

I was wondering if I need a new, special type of external enclosure for the Ultra ATA model or will any common enclosure work. Thanks!

ATA HDD should need a 'regular' 3.5" IDE HDD enclosure. (USB2/IEEE1394)

If it's a SATA drive then the enclosure must be SATA too.

That Seagate 400Gb for $110 does not come with an enclosure, which is why OP is asking what kind of enclosure will work with it.

If you would like to get a 3.5" hard drive(of course, 400GB for 2.5" is not in the market) with a external enclosure, you need to use a AC adater to get the power. It doesn't like 2.5" external enclosure, it only use the USB ports to take the power. You have to check which one you probably need to use.

Of course, you need a external enclosure box if you must use an external hard drive. To purchase an internal 400GB hard drive, and a external box. You must set it up and install it yourself.

I know I need an enclosure. For example , a SATA needs a SATA enclosure. Will a regular ATA enclosure be fine for an UATA drive?

I bought the Seagate 500 GB 16 mb internal HD from outpost.com.

I was wondering what enclosures support 500 GB.

Is the Cintre ZDisc 1-Buttion Instant Backup 3.5-inch External Hard Drive Enclosure good?

There's an extremepcgear one too on bensbargains that was posted 8/24/2006.
