Well, the way I look at it, with the combined company they should be pretty solid. I like both brands. :)

Hmm...I must say that is interesting.

I very much like Maxtor drives, especially their external. Seagate is also good, but not quite a Maxtor IMO.

Maybe Maxtor's will now have 5-year warranties. ;)

The first hardrive I bought was a Maxtor. I think it was the most reliable harddrive I have ever had. Hopefully Seagate will continue to drive for the same high quality standards Maxtor had upheld over so many years.

I've always had better luck with Seagates than Maxtors...but it's more of a model-to-model thing for me(excluding Quantum IDE drives...their SCSI were great, but IDE sucked, Bigfoot and others). I've used a variety of SCSI Seagates at some old IT jobs I had(thank god i abandoned that field) and at home I've used a number of Barracudas(SCSI and IDE) and their budget line.

Personally, I think the Maxtors will debut as Seagate's "budget" line. Once they absorb their tech(probably 2-3 years?), we'll hopefully see some price drops and maybe then you'll see a warranty increase on Maxtors...but I don't see Seagate doing that now. There's a reason Maxtor only offers a 1 year warranty on their drives and many Seagates have a 5 year.

Then again, I'm still happy with my 12.5GB 7200RPM IBM Deskstar(aka Death star) that's been running for I don't know how many years(unlike most fools, I applied the firmware patch that IBM released so my drive never grenaded).

The Hardware Forum? What does this have to do with looking for / buying a new laptop? :p

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....

Very interesting, I have had not such charming luck with Maxtor at all. 2+ failures of 250Gb External Harddrive, 3+ failures of internal harddrive.

The very first computer that I bought 14 years ago had "Seagate 100mb" hard drive.. .it was so reliable that it lasted until the desktop became completely obsolete till 2000 or so..... Not even any single bad sector was observed...

For my 14~15 years of computer user experience, Maxtor has been the worst brand.... Seagate is the best, Western Digital is the second best, Quantun is the third... IBM was quite and fast but didn't last long...

Just based on my experience, Seagate, WD, Quantum and even Samsung never died on me... Maxtor and IBM diappointed me multiple times...

Even nowadays, I don't hesitate when picking up Seagate or WD, but I don't buy Maxtor even if their warranty and price are pretty good....

When I see the news, "Seagate buys Maxtor", I feel like, maybe, WD will be my only preferred one.

    Exactly ;)

    Now back to the topic.

This is pretty good news, I've been a Seagate fan for a while, along with Hitachi and Western Digital.

I've owned a few Maxtor's, I can't comment on it, as they have worked fine.

Yea, Same here. My 6.4GB Seagate ST36451A hard drive is 7 years out of warrenty (have had it for almost 8 years, going through 4 motherboard upgrades, and 6 CPU upgrades) and still chugging along just as good as the day I bought it. Its always been the C:\ on my desktop that I use everyday. I had a bit of trouble with it overheating when I first got it, but ever since I bought a baycooler, its been fine.
The first hard drive I ever had was an IBM, and it came with the computer. It failed after about 18 months. Tried Seagate, and kept buying from them because I've never had a Seagate drive fail on me...
My dad has gone through 3 western digital hard drives that failed in the past 10 years (When one failed, he put in a new one), and my sister has gone through 2 Maxtor Drives ( in 10 years), and 1 Western Digital Drive (which lasted less than 3 years).

Now we're ALL running Seagate drives, except for my dad who has a single 17GB Maxtor drive left that came in his Dell when he bought it in 2000. Still chugging along just fine, but for the past year or so, it sounds a LOT different (much higher pitch) than when we first bought it.. So different, it doesn't sound like a hard drive anymore. Not sure if its about to blow or not, I've never heard of a hard drive sounding so funny.. Except during lightning storms, his computer is on 24/7, and is our multimedia server for the 5 computers on our LAN (we put all our music videos, DivX, and iTunes music on it).

I use my computer very heavily, but I usually turn it off at night.

    *EDIT*
S.M.A.R.T. on my dad's computer with the Maxtor 17GB reports 40,708 power-on hours.

Actually, the first time I bought a hard drive off of eBay, it was a Seagate, and it arrived DOA with the shipper saying it must have broken in transit.. So for me to say I've never had a bad Seagate drive actually isn't true. Never bought a hard drive on ebay after that.
