I have the Sony Vaio TXN27N and I am trying to figure out what sound card it uses. Im not a very good Googler, but someone who is could find this information for me fairly easily.

The second part of this equation is to see if there are XP drivers for this particular sound card. I have forceably installed XP on this system that ships with Vista. I have everything working because I found the generic XP drivers for all the harware components. Just cant figure out what the sound card is, and if there are generic drivers for it somewhere?

The last part of this equation is, if the sound card is proprietary to Sony, am I toast? No sound possible from DVD's etc?

    Thanks!

Thank you! You guys are the best. that worked. I now have sound :)

However I am getting an error now that says "New Hardware found - Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus" and it can't seem to install the drivers for it, or ... i dont know.

Maybe this is hardware that came with. Any idea where such drivers might be found for this modem device that is apparently tied to the sound card?

Side issue: My Function key (which controls brightness, etc) isn't working now that I've installed XP. Apparently there is a software pack for it here: http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNTXN27N&upd_id=2545&os_id=29 but its of course for Windows Vista OS. Any suggestions on how I might find the XP version for this, if at all?

I think the sound card and modem is on the same chip. I am not sure where to get the modem drivers sorry. The Hotkeys drivers is availabe at the sony website for XP. There is a way to mod the drivers search around a bit in this forum. There were a few posts about it I remember.

Unfortunately in the link above you'll see its just for Vista. You're saying there's a way to mod the Vista drivers so that they work in XP? How? Not sure what to search for here on the forums for that.

Its very weird that such a thing as screen brightness is only controlled by keyboard keys and nowhere else? Do you know of where else its controlled?

I will be fairly bummed if I can't decrease the brightness display on this thing. Its very bright and reduces the battery life significantly.

No you cant mod the Vista drivers for XP but you can mod the XP drivers for the older TX that come with XP to work for yours. I am not sure how to do it but there is a way to get around that sony error message 'this driver is not for your model'.

Thats exactly the error message I got. If I knew how to change that I would be in business! Maybe. Each model does have different keys. This one has unique features on it.

Honestly, I can live without all of them, except brightness. There must be another location to change brightness on a laptop. Nothing in windows can do it?

First of all that page says that download is an update to an existing driver. I dont have the existing driver. Its not a full install of a driver. Secondly, it also says that its an update intended to fix a problem with the existing driver, which I don't have. Thirdly, this is a UK site, and i am in the USA and sometimes UK computers are diff than those sold in the USA. Fourthly, this is an update fix for a specific issue related to LCD Power Saving function, which doesn't relate to Function Keys or Display Brightness, but power saving issues (Hibernation, Idle power down, etc).

When I said things had changed, I meant the buttons on the keyboard changing from model to model, which is what we're talking about.

Fist of all it is a new version of a utility and a full install. The new version fixed a bug but it is a full version.

Second of all it is the same utility that all the TX laptops are listed to be using be it from the UK, Taiwan, USA or the South Pole. I just couldnt find it on the US website because things are really confusing over there.

Thirdly I just asked if you can install it. You need 4 things to make the FN keys work under XP. 1. Sony Utils DLL 2. Sony Shared Library 3. the Vaio Powermanagment utilities and 4. the Sony Event Services.
It is the same utility for most Sony Vaios. Not just the TX.

Here is the utility pack for of the initial old version:
