Hello, I'm looking for an external hdd which uses usb 3.0, and is at least 1tb in size. Can anyone suggest any recommendations or companies i should stay away from? I'm buying this in the UK, but i doubt that would add any restrictions. I would also like the drive to be quite portable if possible.

    Thanks!

***EDIT: so sorry. I didn't notice the 3.0 usb. My bad. however the Samsung is a great drive :)

Yesterday I just ordered three Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB drives for backups. These are about $75 USD from Newegg and have been reviewed with haveing excellent performance and are relatively quiet. They use two high density platters of 500GB each.

    Newegg.com - SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

These are 3.5" bare drives and would require you purchasing a SATA to USB adapter with a power cord (or as an enclosure with the adapter and power) seperately. These enclosures are inexpensive and you can find one just about anywhere.

I myself use an eSATA connection from my laptops to a Newertech Voyager "toaster" and just plug in the bare drive and I'm good to go. I rotate my backups accross multiple HHDs so that if one drive fails I can get the previous backup from one of the other drives.

I do not like using USB connections to an external drive because it is so very slow but it depends on what your using the drive for I guess. But I assume with a large 1TB drive then you probably intend to use it for backups or for videos and such. If you have an eSATA (or an express card slot where you can install an eSATA card) then the performance will be way way better than a USB connection.

Western Digital Cavier Black are another favorite of mine... both the 1TB and the 2TB. But one of my cavier black 2TB drives just died a couple days ago as it was nearing full capacity for my backups. That is alot of backup data washed down the drain. Which is what prompted me to buy the Samsung. I'm hopeing for good things with the samsung.

Western Digital does have excellent customer service however and I intend to get a replacement drive and I might even pursue trying to recover the data from the damaged drive.

Anyway, try google searching part number "HD103SJ" to find reviews on the Samsung Spinpoint F3.
