I have a friend who is satisfied with her old Pentium4-based notebook, or at least satisfied until tonight when her PATA hard disk died.

What's the fastest 2.5" PATA hard disk on the market these days?

Anything over, say, 200GB capacity would be fine, and power consumption isn't an issue as she rarely run off the battery. Performance is the primary consideration.

    Thanks.

The fastest 2.5" PATA drives are the 320GB Western Digital WD3200BEVE and 160GB Samsung HM160HC. Both feature 160GB-per-platter density.

If you want faster consider the OWC Mercury Legacy Pro SSD. It uses a SF1200 SSD controller + sata-to-pata bridge.

A cheaper solution may be to swap out the optical drive for a sata-to-pata optical bay caddy hosting your 2.5" SATA SSD or HDD. See http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...rage-using-optical-bay-caddy.html#post4936086 .
