Hey, I've easily replaced RAM in a desktop tower before and I was wondering how difficult laptop RAM is to replace. Most laptops are RAM-upgradeable, so given that I will soon have a RAM-upgradeable laptop, is the memory easily changeable by the user?

Pretty easy. One is usually under a panel on the bottom, the other under the keyboard or in the compartment with the processor. Just take out a few screws.

What notebook are you getting? Somebody probably knows how to get into your specific model.

Likely the Acer Ferrari 4005, or maybe an Asus - either way, the system will be memory upgradeable. Is it advantageous at all to get it done at purchase? If it can be done the same down the road then I prefer that route so it won't hit he wallet as hard all at once - it's mostly not coming out of MY wallet...

Nope, not if you're willing to do it yourself.

sorry, i'm a complete noob at this.

do you need any precautions when doing this ie. anti-static measures etc. maybe a step by step "dummy's guide"

    thanks

It is always recommended to wear an anti static wrist band when working with electronics since they are highly sensitive to static electricity. Other than this remove the power cord and dissconnect the battery before removing the panel. If you take care and do the installation methodically there shouldnt be any problems.

i watched the actual installation when i bought my dv1000.. it's as easy as opening the compartment, popping out the old ram, and plugging in the new ram.. 30sec procedure.

Installing laptop RAM is mostly easier than installing desktop RAM.

Agreed with Dr. You actually have to open the whole computer case up to get it. On most computers, its a simple screw (s). Making it a lot easier.
