I've been trying to locate some benchmarks comparing a similarly clocked Sempron and Turion. From what little I found here and on the web it seems as though they are pretty much the same, speed wise. I realize that the Turion is a 64 bit processor, but is that the only difference? If running non-64bit os/apps, will there be any difference in speed?

If you have any benchmarks which show a difference in speed between the two, could you please post the website?

    Thanks!

The main difference in performance between the Sempron and the Turion is the L2 cache. The Sempron has 128/256K compared to the 512/1024K in the Turion. The Turion also scales higher(2.4GHz for the ML 44 vs. 2.0GHz for the 3300+). There arent many benchmakrs which directly compare the 2, but being that both the Sempron and the Turion are architecturally similar to the Athlon64, search for some reviews for those and practically the same differences will exist between the Turion and the Sempron.

Thank Miner for the reply. I checked out the web page that you linked to and it compared a 1.60GHz Sempron to a 1.80Ghz Turion. From what little I've been able to find, if they compared a 1.8GHz Sempron with a 1.8GHz Turion, they would probably come out about close to the same. Unfortunately, like you said, the web pages that compare the two directly are hard to come by ( I wonder why?)

It will be close, but definately will be a step behind the Turion in terms pf performance. Some benchmarks are more sensitive to cache. If you need something on the cheap which is powerful for day to day tasks then the Sempron will de just fine. If you can afford it I would say get the Turion. The Sempron can only run 32bit applications but in most laptops it can be upgaded to a Turion, so you will still have that option open as well.

The Sempron/Turions are just basically low powered versions of the Skt 754 Sempron/Athlon64, so their performance mimics their desktop versions with little variations. Any reviews comparing the Athlon64 and Sempron will be valid for a similar Sempron/Turion. Most reviewers take this into consideration, although they are on different platforms(laptopvs desktop), you can get a rough idea on the peroformance differences.
