I just purchased a new notebook:

    ASUS ROG GL752VW-DH71 Gaming Laptop 6th Generation Intel Core i7 6700HQ (2.60 GHz) 16 GB Memory 1 TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 2 GB GDDR5 17.3" Windows 10 Home 64-Bit

I am looking for some suggestions on setting up dual monitors when working/gaming at my desk.

What would you suggest? I believe the laptop has one hdmi port, one mini displayport and a usb type-c port on it.

I need to buy the two monitors and any cables / adaptors that are necessary.

Buy two identical monitors with the hdmi and displayports on both and simply connect them.

When you have physically connected everything, you can then use the display controls within Windows to configure them as you like.

Or, are you actually asking which monitors, specifically? If so, you need to specify the workflow requirements that you require of those monitors and the budget you have.

Otherwise, simply connect what you can and it should just work.

I would also recommend not going too much over 1920x1080 on each monitor and using a dock if possible, if for nothing else; convenience when attaching and removing your notebook from a stationary role.

    Good luck.

Thank you very much for the response.

I'm looking to spend about $500 total, that would include a dock if I went that route.. all the docks ive found are pretty expensive.

So you're suggesting I connect one with the mini display port and one with hdmi and I wouldn't need any adaptors? Will they look much different?

    Thankyou

be careful when getting a dock. unless its specifically made by asus for your model laptop, the "universal" docks are likely not going to be useful for gamming -- especially the usb docks.
I've been looking into the same thing, mostly for convenience purposes, and will be waiting for the thunderbolt docks to come out.

No true dock for your machine anyway. Because gaming machines don't have real docks.

That is actually changing --- thunderbolt docks are coming, and if they're everything that is being promised, should give us some proper docking stations--- the razer dock lets you drop in an external graphics card, has usb, and Ethernet , all connected through a thunderbolt 3 connection. MSI is supposed to the fact that their latest models all sport thunderbolt 3 is a good sign).

I'm probably going to wait for the MSI dock, since I have an MSI, and I'm convinced the razer dock will be crazy expensive and will likely have some proprietary BS that only allows it to work with razer laptops, but we'll see.

Anyway, they're coming in the next few months, so I'd hold off on buying any dock right now.

if you want something that's decent and don't want to wait for thunderbolt, , you can try this one:

Since it's usb 3.0, I doubt it will run games, but looks like its decent for productivity-type applications.

Universal docks are more port replicators. Thunderbolt will make them more usable. MSI's dock system will bring very usable features to the gaming world. And very welcomed. Thanks for that update.

well, yes and no. There are a bunch out now that either use displayport or usb 3.0 that give you 2-3 monitors regardless of what kind of ports you have. If thunderbolt wasn't around the corner, I would actually try one of them. But IMHO it's just not worth the money to even experiment- - thunderbolt docks appear to give a no-compromise solution.

They are a compromise if it is just monitors. These docks need storage options, eGPU connections, networking options, and more to be full service. Basically give you desktop style features at home and keep weight down on the road.

the thunderbolt docks are a compromise? how so? the razer includes e-gpu, usb, Ethernet, and a thunderbold port to daisy chain... hard to see how this is a compromise, it beats the heck out of the Lenovo dock I'm using right now.
If you're referring to USB 3 docks, I agree, and that's why I'm waiting for the thunderbolt dock to arrive
