How important are shock mounted hardrives?
Anyone know much about them?
I would be using my future laptop on planes and occasionally on buses.

Shock mounted hard drives like on ThinkPads park the heads on the hard drive if it detects the notebook is being dropped. It will hopefully prevent damage to the drive. Using them on buses or on airplanes can set them off if they are set to sensitive.

Another way to "shock-proof" hard drives that i've seen used, at least in some toughbooks is to mount the drive in a foam bed. Not sure how helpful that would be in a big drop but...i guess it all helps.
