Hi,
I'm looking for a rugged/shockproof 2.5" hard drive enclosure.
Are the LaCie's really built pretty tough? They are expensive, but if they do what they claim to do, then I can accept it. But I'm not sure. Equally important, can I upgrade the drive's capacity myself? Thanks

What exactly are you going to be doing with the drive/enclosure?

If/when all else fails, you go with the hard drive that can take a 12-gauge shotgun blast and come out looking like a champ: GO ANYWHERE | Rugged Portable Hard Drives, Waterproof Mobile Storage, USB 3.0 | CrushPROOF Full Metal Jacket with Military Grade Specs in SSD or HDD This thing is near-impossible to destroy, and the price is surprisingly reasonable considering what they're offering.

What are you using it for?

If you just need shock resistance as the top goal here, maybe a SSD is a good idea?
For the cost of a "rugged" hdd you can get a very shock proof SSD that will be faster as a bonus. -
My thinking exactly. Mechanical hard drives are not manufactured to withstand repeated abuse and I think the OP is better served with an SSD storage device instead. If the data on your storage device is that critical and severe abuse is expected on that device, then the extra investment in an SSD makes sense.
Shockproof, rugged hard drive enclosures? LaCie?
