    Hey all,

i've had my laptop for almost a year now (warranty almost over) and i'm thinking about upgrading. It's a compaq presario v2310CA with turion ml-28 processor @ 1.6Ghz. Is it easy to upgrade the chip? If so, what chip should i be getting and where/how much should i buy it for?
Has anyone upgraded an amd chip?

No, it is totally not easy to change the CPU. Because there are alot of parts to remove. On my Dell 1150, I have to remove the keyboard, EMI shield, and microprocessor thermal-cooling assembly. I would not recommend this kind of upgrade if you are a beginner.

What tasks are you performing that require more processing power? In my opinion, it is not worth it to upgrade the CPU. It won't make a difference in everyday apps.
If you want to increase performance, it would be a better idea to add more RAM.

Or a faster hard drive will increase performance more than a CPU upgrade.

I agree with Chaz and Zaz, RAM and HD are not only very easy to upgrade but you will definately see an improvement with 2GB RAM and a 7200 rpm HD compared to a small processor clock increase.

Just cuz ur laptop is hard to get to the cpu, doesnt mean EVERY SINGLE laptop in the world is like that. My Acer u simply remove a back panel and u got the cpu right there, 3 screws later and its out...so dont spread misinformation unless u worked on his exact laptop and have had difficulties reaching the cpu in a compaq presario

I know that every notebook is not the same and I am not spreading misinformation, ok? I am just telling this person is not worth the upgrade if this person is a beginner.

He just wanted to know how hard it was, and u told him very hard to get to the cpu, which can vary. He didnt ask for ur opinion whether he should or should not do it, he just asked how hard it is.

Well if you looked at his post, it clearly said "If so" after "Is it easy to upgrade the chip?" question. So I think his or her knowledge of upgrading is very limit.

Super_Cow, sorry about this. To clearly how hard this is, look at your manual, on page 172. If you dont have it, click here.

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?lc=en&cc=ca&dlc=en&product=503486&lang=en&

As you can see inorder to proceed to the processor, you must remove...

    Optical drive
    Switch cover
    Keyboard
    Display assembly
    Base enclosure
    Heat sink
    And the Fan

Yes his knowledge is limited...still dont see where he asked for ur opinion on whether he should go ahead or not with this adventure.

    Hey

Wow, thanks for all the feedback. After reading that long list of parts I have to remove to get to the chip that NetBrakr posted, i'm going to opp out of this upgrade, at least for a while. But i'm definitely gonna consider up-ing RAM and a hard-drive. Considering that i'm in canada, are there any places/webistes that i can get them for a good price?

p.s yes, my knowledge of comps is very limited :)

    Hello again,

I suggest that you take a look at tigerdirect. I used them plenty of times and I love their prices.

Additional info...your notebook supports 2 GB DDR PC2700.
