Hey everyone. I have been given an e machine from a friend. I am thinking about upgrading the ram to 1GB from 512. I am wondering if anyone has experience with these laptops and if I should bother with an older machine like this. I am using it mostly to meet with clients at wi fi locations and walk them through our company's basic features of a website. No gaming, design or editing video. Also want to load Norton for protection as I already have a couple more pc's I can protect with my original purchase. Basically, is there a downside to this computer, will upgrading the ram give me a normal paced search and surf capability? Thanks, I am a bit of a newbie.

Are you on XP, if so 1GB should be sufficient, but please do not sink too much money into this machine, as it seems to be on its last toe.

I agree with narsnail, don't throw too much money on it. Especially with the older machines, the ram might be a little pricey.

yeah i would run it as is or spend a little more than $200 and get a descent netbook that will probably run faster and be better for internet browsing... and may impress the clients more than that dinosaur...

Thanks everyone for the advice. It seems like the ram is between 40 and 50 bucks, need to check whether they are offering DDR. It does run XP. If I don't need to do much else I don't mind 50 bucks. I have done all the updates, spyware sweeps with adaware and cleaned out the temp files. It seems to function decent, although slow. Will be looking for a new laptop beginning next year, just want to have something for now.

Also I would like to point out that norton does take a chunk out of your cpu, I usually wouldn't worry as much, but in this case you should be using something lighter.

Lighter Security than Norton. Any suggestions. I'm sure that is a big box of opinions.

Hmm I use avg, it's better than norton. But I'm sure there are others.
