    9Hello all.

I have an hp 8460p with the i7 and ati 6470m graphics that is getting a little old. I run ubuntu as my primary os with win 7 as a virtual machine. It is about 2.5 to 3 years old and the video drivers are a little sketchy with ati...

And yesterday the hdd died and so did my back up.

It is about $230 for 2 1tb hybrid drives. ( sadly 9.5mm height so that limits future usage in a new computer). 500gb could work but would cut it close down the road'

I am trying to figure out if it is worth it... my ideal computer would be that 14inch slim computer from system76 which would be about $1100 or a lenovo x230.
I dont know if there is going to be another refresh soon.

I just dont know how much longer my hp (which I do dislike) is worth getting maybe another 6 months of use out of.

Any thoughts or ideas I did not think of?

If all it that is wrong with it is a dead HDD, then it's certainly worth fixing. If you want to buy a larger sized drive, just get the cheapest drive, unless you use it for a scratch disk/copy major files from it.

For what it is worth a i7 6470M GPU and that is old man I be happy with that system if someone game me that. Trust me if it is the HDD that is bad that is far from being a tossed computer just get a newer HDD or SSD and your back in business. A bad HDD is far easier to fix and save money on then a bad board or broken LCD those can get expensive or hard to find or even harder to get if those go out. The LCD might be easier to find but the board will be the stickier one.

It was chosen by the school and I got to keep it after I graduated.
I was just dont really like the computer... Poor screen quality, runs really hot (melted a video card once), very big, heavy, and the battery is not what it once was (granted I am no longer a student), and I am not a fan if ati drivers.

But I am thinking it is worth more to me than just selling it and buying a new device...

    I'll buy it for 50. :)

But in general, if it is a CRU (customer replaceable unit) part that fails, it is much cheaper then an FRU breaking.

The HDD is never wasted money - you can always use it in your next system (either internal or external in an enclosure).

Seems worth the money if you don't want to spend the money for a new system!

I was sort of thinking that a nexus 7 would be cool and does everything I want.

It just seems strange to spend more on hdd than what I could sell it for.

I'm pretty sure you could walk away with a couple of bills even without the HDD...but whether that would get you what you want is a whole another matter.

Put in a 750GB HDD for the time being until you save $$$ for a newer machine and call it a day. That's what I would do anyway.

    Good luck.

I'd fix it. If you can deal with non-hybrid drives, the Hitachi GST travelstar is what I use, 1tb, 7200rpm, 32mb cache, and you can find them for as low as 65-70 US $
