    Should I go with WD5000BEVT or Seagate 7200.4 7200.3 or WD3200BEKT

Some okay deals on newegg, from 0-10$ off, so i'm looking to purchase one of these so I can upgrade my next notebook.

Which one of these is the best price for performance? I'm not concerned too much about capacity, cause I'm not even breaking 50GB on my old desktop HDD. What i'm concerned about is speed, loudness, and then price, but, if it's a right price, an extra small amount of money for more capacity is fine.

So the WD5000BEVT is a nice performer for a 5400 RPM drive in regards to speed, but is it faster then the 320GB 7200RPM HDDs? Should I pitch in a couple more bucks for the larger capacity to fall back on and maybe a similar or faster performance?

Or should I stick with a 320GB 7200 RPM drive?
I've taken a look at benchmarks and all that, but still need help.

So other than speed, i'm also concerned about how loud it is. Obviously the quieter the better, so any suggestions?

The 7,200 RPM 320 GB Hard Drive will be faster than the 5,400 RPM one, however, the 5,400 RPM one is faster than the last-generation 200 GB 7,200 RPM hard drives because of its density.

It depends on what 320GB/7200rpm drive you're comparing it to.

WD5000BEVT is faster than Seagate 7200.3 320GB. No doubt.

WD3200BEKT and WD5000BEVT perform equal in most situations, except for heavy multi tasking. The WD3200BEKT is faster in those situations because of faster I/O and acces times.

The 320GB 7200.4 is slower than the 250GB and 500GB versions.

Shorter stroked 2-platter 320GB 7200.4 will have faster seek than longer stroked 250GB/500GB version.

All this HDD mumbo jumbo is new to me.

When I said Seagate 7200.4 I was referring to the 500GB 7200RPM. I won't go with it anyway.

The real competition here is the WD5000BEVT vs Seagate 7200.3 320GB 7200RPM and the WD3200BEKT.

Capacity not really issue, reiterating. From most important to least: speed, noise, price, wattage, heat, then capacity.

I don't think the WD5000BEVT's price is too bad which is why i'm considering it. Looking from what everyone has inputed, it looks like i'll be going with the 320GB 7200RPM HDDs though.

So, I'm guessing WD3200BEKT is faster than the Seagate 7200.3 320GB 7200RPM? What about noise and power draw?

Yeah, like I've said, i've looked at those benchmarks but still had a little trouble deciding.

I'm worried about the WD3200BEKT noise level.

No point. WD5000BEVT is faster in most situations.

    Yes
    Noise & powerdraw, see here.

    I think i made a typo when i said i'd go with the 7200.4.

Thanks for the tips... i'm still worried about the Scorpio black's noise and power draw, which seem pretty high under idle and in the middle under load. Hmm...

I would go with WD5000BEVT. It's the best mix of speed, price, power draw, noise and capacity.

Still very much a toss up for me between the WDs. It would also cost 20$ more + tax.

It will be very hard to notice any speed difference between the two WDs.

The only moment the 7200rpm will be noticeably faster is in heavy mutlitasking, let's say when you have three programs accessing the hdd.

Here's an example, keep in mind though that the Scorpio Blue mentioned here is not as fast as the WD5000BEVT.

I see, thanks for the that. Right now i'm just considering the price difference.
