    ...for my HP HDX?

What's the take on the engineering samples? They're clearly way cheaper than the retail versions. I like my T8100, but my audio work and gaming would like abit more juice, especially under vista.

Stay away from ES CPUs, since most have their thermal sensors screwed up, or the BIOS does not have the proper thermal table relating to the CPU (Also depends if the BIOS's kernel code has been updated to support Penryn XEs)....and 99.9% of the ES CPUs undergo extensive benchmarking and stuff like that - to check their stability and all (and are sometimes missing important intel features).

You will be better of paying extra for the non-ES X9000 (not necessarily retail)
There are plenty of OEMs on ebay, under $400..!! (And I am unaware of the fact if your Notebook would welcome the X9000 or not)

And if your notebook's BIOS has the advanced menu hidden, then you might not be able to control the CPU frequency or the CPU multiplier through the BIOS..!! (For Overclocking)

I agree with Andy. You don't know at what stage of development it is from? As said what was done to it. It is well, a gamble. If I collected I might like them for that purpose but not as a general use CPU. To unpredictable.

It is tempting because of what it could offer but if it does not deliver, real possibility. You are stuck.

This is the issue, every X9000 I've found on ebay is an ES, sometimes they try to hide it in smaller print, but it still is.

I definately won't get an ES now tho.

I've owned 3 X9000s till now, each of 'em installed in the Dell D630

The max temp I have got with the non-ES is 86*C and with both the ESs: 96*C :D
I got the non-ES from a Chinese guy (EBay) for $380 shipped to UK....But I never saw him selling non-ES X9000s again.

there are quite a few guys the gateway forum who upgraded their notebooks with es cpus ( i am one of them ) none reported any problems.

you can ask the seller to post a cpuz validation and make sure you get a doa replacement. if anyone can actually point to a bad x7800/x7900/x9000 es cpu i would highly appreciate it, so far i have heard/read/seen none.

i hope you get the cpu you like (retail/oem/es what have you) and make the most of it.
