Hey guys, I was thinking about upgrading to 4 gb 800mhz cosair ram for my vista 32 platform.

I currently have 3gb of ram running 633 mhz.

Can vista 32 use 800 mhz rams? How big of a performance increase do you think I'd get?

It's a little over 3GB (3.24GB comes to mind). Another consideration is the dual channel issue. However, as discussed in the Dual Channel RAM Guide, the performance loss caused by asymmetric RAM is small.

Conclusion: You are unlikely to see the difference.

Yeah, not really worth it. Unless you intend on moving to 64bit soon.

yeh maybe i will. Ive seen some crazy laptop setups where the guys putting in 8gb 1333mhz memory, can vista 64 even utilize that>?

no consumer laptop can utulize 8gb 1333mhz so far due to chipset and BIOS limitations

1333mhz is DDR3 which isnt even out yet, no laptop chipset can run it yet

Actually, some notebook/hardware/bios combinations can get up to 3.5 GB.

I've also seen users claiming 3.5 with their notebook.

    http://blogs.msdn.com/hiltonl/archive/2007/04/13/the-3gb-not-4gb-ram-problem.aspx

So it's a gamble. I think it's worth it if it can use 3.5 GB and of course if your apps need it, 500 MB is 500 MB.

    ;)

I really don't think it's worth it. Once you get above 2 GB, you can run vista perfectly fine, and most games won't even see an improvement when you move to 3 GB, let alone 4. I'd stick with the 3 that you have now, and save your money.

    Not worth it.
Unless you get x64 OS, it won`t matter, 3 Gb or 3.25Gb is pretty much the same.
    3 Gb is sufficient...

I'm running Vista 32, with Age of Conan and my RAM is at 85% utilization. I'll lose the minimal increase from dual channel by upgrading to 3Gig (1G+2G), but it will give me more headroom to avoid using swap disk.

For $60 bucks, can sell old 1G for $20, so net $40 bucks. Why not.

I was shocked how much of a beast AoC was, and the 27Gig HD required.
My laptop always ran WoW and EQ2 with no issues. Hopefully they will optimize AoC, and the 8800M GTX becomes more affordable in 15.4 notebooks.

:) I like how u use the word yet flip, becaue that's where Montevina comes in to play; It supports DDR3, and Vista 64 Bit Editions already supports it..up to a whopping 128GB+.
