In Quake 4, which has a patch that allows you to use the dual core, there's a big difference. Up to an 87% increase in fps according to the ReadMe. HyperThreaded Pentium 4's see around a 25% increase.
Of course, if you are GPU limited then there will be less of a difference. (Info above from"Chaz")
The processer you have now is fine for a while. You may want to try overclocking it though.

I'd say for gaming your cpu is ok for a while unless games really start using both cores. 2Gb of ram will be very useful for the latest games. You could possibly upgrade to a Core 2 Duo to keep your laptop competitve but I wouldn't say it was essential for a while yet. I'd wait for Santa Rosa when C2D (667) prices should come down a bit. If you do a lot of multitasking it might make a good upgrade sooner.

I agree with moon angel. At the moment, if you not graphics bottlenecked, a processor upgrade won't help all that much. If your main tasks are to game, surf the web and a typing up a few documents here and there, then a processor upgrade won't yield any performance advantage. If your tasks include encoding, and other applications that can utilise the extra core, then an upgrade may be worth it, but as moon angel said, wait a while, as the prices should come down.
