I have been looking for a laptop lately. I am a AMD fan. So I search only Turion64(X2). I looked at some benchmark(2.0GHz), and it often beats by the Intel Core due. I also saw the news about the Merom. I'm worried if I buy one with Turion64 X2 right now, will it be a dead machine soon? And I also want to know what will the next AMD Mobile processor be.

It won't be dead, but this is how technology works. One thing you are buying top of the class and newest technology, a week later, something new comes out.

Simply put, buy it when you absolutely need it, since you can not avoid the technology train.

I am also a fan of AMD, but there's no denying that Intel has the edge in mobile CPUs at the moment. I wouldn't bother waiting for AMD to release their next generation CPUs (the K8L), from what I've heard they're not due until early 2008.

Still the Turion X2, while it's beaten by Core Duo in some benchmarks, is a plenty powerful CPU.

It seems AMD will lose this mobile battle soon in Q3(the Merom).

No!no!no! I still have confidence in AMD's desktop CPUs, they show the best quality now, and I don't think it's going to change!!!!

It might be likely that Intel will step forward and try to take the desktop arena back again from AMD with Core Duo 2.

As for the difference in CPUs - Intel's Core Duo certainly has an edge over any comparable AMD X2 CPU, but not by a lot. When do you have to have your notebook by?

The Turion X2 will probably cost more than the comparable Core Duo. There really is no point in paying more for a lesser chip. I love AMD as well but Intel is totally raping them in all arenas. Conroe is on the verge of being released and it just kills AM2. Some store is actually selling Conroe chips at this time and even shipping them!

As always with such questions. Look at Your current needs, there is always something new and better in its path. Ofcourse if a new tech is right around the corner (for sure) then wait. But You might get disappointed since they might delay the release... :)

Processer designers are kind of at a brick wall right now, Im not sure if anyone noticed, but in 1998 if you bought a computer, It would be obsolete in 1999-2000. Times have changed, you can buy a computer in 2002, and it can still be kick a** if you take care of it. Yes of course when you bought it in 2002 the price was probably double or more. And yes there are some new fancy technologies that have come out for processers, but there havent been any huge breakthroughs latley that make all the machines out there that are 2 years old or older, obsolete. Maybe this has to do with Windows Xp launching, but who knows.
