Tomshardware just released an article saying that the 64 bit processor, "merom" will have longer battery life than the duo (32 bit). I am assuming that the 64 bit processor will have better performance as well. I am wondering, since it will only be around half a year later than the duo release, should I wait for a 64 bit processor?

Ultimately, you need to do what will make you happy. Here's the deal, though. Something better is always a couple months away, and the prices will always drop after you make your purchase. Do what feels right to you at the time you choose to make a purchase. Waiting for the next big thing is a cycle that leads to never making a purchase. The duo is a fantastic chip. The merom (or whatever it's called) will also be fantastic chips.

Don't forget Core duo is already released for a little month or so. I heard there are rumours (how 'hard' these are, I don't know) that Meroms release "will be most likely postponed to somewhere March next year".

It's possible that this will be a long wait, though...
