This is in the wrong section, should be in hardware
but did you get the same hard drive as hers?
and umm like can you hear yours always or just sometimes? -
-
Thread Moved to Hardware.
Some hard drives do have better acoustic/acoustic modes than others
If you hear a ticking/clicking noise, that it your hard drives head parking itself to prevent disk damage from shock. -
-
find out what HDD you have, and look at the manufacturer's website. they usually provide tools for acoustic managment.

Surely its normal for HDD's to click. Try defragging it maybe that will cut down the noise it makes as it will be more efficient in seeking info.
-
couldnt find any tools
i should add that i got a new one, and its doing the same thing. hers is still dead quiet. best buy said it isnt normal. i figure i will give it 1 week and then return it if it doesnt stop (which it probably wont). -
see if you have an option for acoustic management in your system bios... then turn it to slow/silent mode or just turnit off/bypass.
other than that, there are some tools around for setting acoustic management in Windows, just do a search for harddrive seek-noise or ticking sound and I am sure you'll find an appropriate thread. -
Depends on the hard drive. I can here mine clearly in a quiet environment. Compare your sister’s HDD model and yours. If they are different, then it is normal.
To find out the HDD model go to Device Manager > Disk drives. Search the model name in google to find the exact details (i.e: manufacturer, speed etc..).

no options in bios, exact same drive. ill check it out, but i dont like having to find a fix for something that should already be okay. i hear it any time the drive seeks ANYTHING.
to tell you the truth, i will probably end up returning it again. it pisses me off knowing that one is okay, and one is not.
-
bump...anyone else have any ideas?
hers was "optimized" by geek squad, but they didnt actually do anything. my first one was as well, but it still had this issue. -
Ok try this
1) Hit Windows key + R
2) Type in services.msc
3) Look for the Superfetch service
4) Stop the service and disable it from startup.
5) Restart system
If your HDD still makes alot of noise then undo the above. -
in addition to the click, i sometimes hear an insanely high pitched noised. like so high pitched that some people cannot hear it.
-
That high pitched noise might be your processor. I hear mine too occasionally.

any other opinions?

re: the harddrive: I'd send it in and get a replacement
Should i be able to hear the HDD activity?
