check ur option of "pagefile clearing when shutdown" - this could add quite a DELAY in shutting down

    cheers ...

Try doing a defragment on the system, and also when you shutdown, you may have alot of programs already running. Stopping these from starting up helps alot, because then Windows down't have to sort them out later. Alternatively, you can exit these programs manually just before shutting down.

You didn't mention if you have XP or Vista - if you have Vista and are using say an SD card for ReadyBoost - then you might want to check that out. Both systems (HP's) I've tried ReadyBoost with an SD card have exhibited the 1 minute+ shutdown routine - until the SD card is removed.

:) lucky me, having no HP, my old eMachines has no issue with the sd card used as ready.boost - the card is constantly in & vista shutdown is instantly

    cheers ...

XP clears this data (if you have XP I assume?) for security reasons.

There could something which doesn't want to shutdown properly. The default timeout before windows kills the process is quite long. Somewhere, there is an option to shorten the timeout, but I can't remember where.

Maybe life would be easier if you use hibernation and avoid the shutdown / startup business except when needed for software reasons.
