Hi. I just bought a new asus x59sl laptop with the following specs:

    C2D T5450(1.6 ghz)
    2 GB RAM
    HD 3470 GPU (256 MB VRAM, 64bit)
160 GB 5400 RPM seagate hdd

    And a SiS chipset.

I heard that SiS chipsets are the cheapest on the market(which might explain this aus's excellent price).

Does the SiS chipset affect performance opposed to, say an intel chipset in a system with identical specs?

I'm asking because this system gets 1650 pts in 3dmark06(default). However, in UT3 its performance seems on par(if not slightly worse) with my older packard bell(same specs except for the gpu, 64bit x1700 with 128 vram).

Your gpu is the HD3470 not the SIS chipset. The chipset is just there to manage the hardware, it doesn't do anything that you should be aware of.

I just installed UT2004 and i noticed that the performance is a little choppier than with my older packard bell (i945 xhipset, see sig for specs). Load times seem to be significantly longer.

Performance in UT2004 might be because the 3470 is a weaker GPU than your old X1700. Overall, while the SiS chipset probably isn't as good as the Intel alternative, you shouldn't be able to feel the difference. Did you actually time these load times or are you just "feeling" it? It might be psychological...

You're rght about that, i didn't actually time the loading, i just see that it takes longer to load the game(or a map) on the laptop with the SiS. I also see some slight stuttering and lowering framerates on big maps that don't occur on my older packard bell.

But does the fact that the 3470 is weaker cont on such an old game? Keep in mind that my x1700 has a 64bit bus and only 128 VRAM.

The chipset has nothing to do with your gaming performance. It shouldn't matter.

Have you tried updating your drivers?

Yup, running catalyst 9.4. The rest of the drivers are from the asus CD.

This isn't a big issue, as this laptop won't be used much, let alone for gaming, i was just asking out of curiosity.
