My hard drive makes a soft "clunk" noise every 30 seconds or so when my notebook is idle. Is this a sign that my hard drive is going?

I've started to back up all my data btw.

What kind of HD do you have? I've had two HD fail, one in my desktop ad one in my laptop, the one in my laptop didnt give me any warning at all. The one in my desk top was making noises like a a car with a flat tire, and the next time i booted up it was gone. Good call on backing up your data before its too late.

    What make of hard disk?

Most of the manufacturers have diagnostic software on their websites which will check the performance and look at the SMART data. There's also ActiveSMART for a second opinion. However, it's not infallible - several years ago it was predicting that one of my HDDs was going to die, but the HDD failed to oblige.

    However, do your backup first.

It's a 100gb Fujitsu MHV2100AH PL, it came stock with my W3J. I also ran the error checking utility in windows and it didn't find anything. Anything else I can do?

There may be no fault at all. Sometimes laptop hard drives make the noise your describing and it perfectly normal. If you are unsure then keep backing up your data. With laptop HDDs the normally fail quite quickly/start losing files/causing bluescreens. If none of this is happening then your probably ok
