If my system has two memory slots, and it has 512 in each. Can I take one out and add 1gb and run it at 1.5gb of RAM?

I know that my desktop has to have matching pairs, but I do not know if my laptop does.

It is an Acer 5100 series.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thank you

Yes. And don't worry about dual channeling or anything like that, it'll work much better with the 1GB in. In my opinion and from experience, 1.5GB is the optimum amount in terms of cost/performance for XP.

This system will be running Vista. The sytems pulls 256 off the ram to run the X1100 graphics chipset.

I assume that it will still work with the 1.5?

Eh...judging from the memory usage I've seen in Vista, you'll be fine for everyday tasks such as web browsing, photos/videos, etc. but really 2GB is needed for intensive tasks such as gaming.
